Guys, I am just going to say one thing:
The reason why VW has been so long with V7 is that they had 2000+ copies of V6 in Sydney.
The V7 maps were out from November 2013 in reality.

We have been warned not to distribute them etc etc.

If Volkswagen owners cannot spend $50-$100 for a genuine map they can use on all their VW vehicles then this is what will happen in the future:

- maps will cost $500+ and they will be SD card based with activation only av at VW as is with RNS 315 or Golf 7
- VW will only allow updates at their dealerships.
- they will think of something else

I understand that $500 for new maps is a joke. But please answer one question - is $50-$100 unreasonable?

I use Sygic navigation on my Galaxy S4, and it cost me $40 with lifetime updates for the app and the maps, at least 4 times a year...

I get it that everyone has to "get paid", but the RNS510 pricing through a dealership should include lifetime maps, given how far you get bent over to pay for it in the first place...

I'd happily pay $50 for updates for the duration of me owning the vehicle...

I work in the IT services industry, so I don't pirate other folks work, as I appreciate the effort to bring a product to market, but our Alltrack will stay on the V6 maps it was delivered with, unless the service department (who I get on with exceptionally well) gives me a free upgrade for it...

In hindsight we should have pushed for map updates when we did the sales negotiation for the car...

I guess what I was trying to say is if you would rather pay $50-$100 for a genuine DVD in the future or $500 for lets say SD card
VW Australia is trying to outsmart us as well and they do monitor forums.
What they did with RNS 315 is introduce a SD card which only works in one unit and cannot be copied
The cost of it is $500+GST or thereabouts.
They have to pay Telstra for the maps as well (Where Is)

The SD card-thing is already done (Golf 7, Toureg RNS8xx). I'm sure all the other cars when updated will also use SD cards for nav. v7 could be the last Au/NZ map to be released in DVD format. Woe to anyone who buys a second hand Golf Mk7 in 5 years time hoping they can upgrade the map data easily (assuming it's crack-proof).
Links to older versions of maps here seem to be ok still (no takedown requests)???
The main benefit for me has been the user-customisations to the stock products (i.e. POIs embedded into the map DVD or partition size customisations in firmware upgrades, etc).

in reality vw and other car manufacturors should include the cost of the maps upgrades in the foreseeable future for free..the cost of them paying Telstra or whereis should be included in the price of the car for 3-4 years in my opinion...

I bought the maps last year and have requested maps for v7. My phone has the latest maps and can be updated for free for anywhere in the world. The are on the phone not downloaded as required. I have Oz USA and Canada maps. It would be nice to link the phone to the radio for navigation.

Not everyone has their RNS510 installed new from the factory. There are quite a few that go in aftermarket so even though free maps is a nice idea it's going to be pretty hard to police the RNS units getting made in China....

Even if they did include free map upgrades with new vehicles, you still pay for it one way or another as there is a real cost associated with producing new maps.

I think $50 for a new set of maps every year or two is not unreasonable. If you're happy enough with the version you have then save your $50 and wait until v8 comes out in a year or 2.

I wouldn't stress to much guys, Google is doing alot of work with vehicle manufacturers currently (including Audi) to bring android to cars. When we have that paying for maps will become obsolete. You'll get live Google traffic updates and new roads will be included instantaneously. I'm guessing you'll even get a pretty picture of what your destination is supposed to look like.

Paying for an encrypted SD card is only temporary and like most things will probs be cracked after release. Even dealership updates aren't bullet proof.
