I'd say it is built into the unit itselfs firmware. Secondly, bluetooth airplay came out last year but so far not a peep from anyone about whether units with carplay already will support it. You would think they would, but who knows.
I've got a new FY16 Tiguan with Apple's CarPlay, which is pretty decent. It does however crash occasionally - as in the entire CarPlay experience on the head unit crashes and dumps you back into the standard VW multimedia environment. I'm assuming this will improve over time, I'm just not sure how CarPlay itself gets updated.
My question is, how does the CarPlay app - as installed on the head unit (not on your phone) get updated? I can see two options:
1 - VW insert a CD/USB into the headunit and do an update
2 - You push an update from your connected iPhone to the headunit
I hope it's not 1 - manufactures are notoriously slow to issue these kinds of updates. Does anyone know for sure?

i had this happen on my 2015 polo.. i took it back to the dealer and they updated the firmware. its been fine ever since
I'm really hoping there will be an update to these headunits to allow bluetooth carplay. Knowing car makers though they will likely not be bothered.
