    Tiguan RVC install questions

Hi, I've read a heap of threads off this forum and other bits of the web and have a couple of questions

    1. Does the Tig come pre-wired for an RVC? Presumably RGB wiring but I could use that for composite.

    2. I'm only using one of the 2 antenna cables into my ANS810 head unit, presumably the shark fun.
If the other cable is the heated rear window antenna then could I use that as the video feed? Presumably thats 50ohm coax but it might work?

    Anyone tried anything similar ?

    Many thanks.

In my experience, unless a component was installed at the factory, the wiring is not there either.
Why install $10 worth of copper per car when you don't have to?
I think composite video cable is normally 75ohm.

I'm not an electrical engineer but you could probably just try and use the antenna cable and live with some possible ghosting/interference with the image caused by reflections in the cable due to the impedence mismatch.
You could try putting a ferrite choke on the cable near the RCA connector but not sure how effective this might be.

Your best bet is to just set aside half a day and run the cable. Its a pain pulling out trim etc but the end result will be the best image quality that is possible with the camera. Buy/borrow an electrician's cable pull tool (conduit snake) and a wire coat hanger also comes in handy for poking through dash holes etc.

I thought composite video was on standard wire - not 50 or 75 ohm coax.
not saying you can't use the antenna cable, but you will need to cut and put on the correct (RCA) connector for the video at the head unit, and presumably ground the shield, and do the same at the other end.
Agree with Kamold - run the wire, yes it is a PITA but it is probably not that much more work than what I've described above. Plus you need to run a 12V source for the camera too (but you can do that from the tailgate power socket though) and tap the reverse light wire as well.

Check before you do that — don't know about the Tiguan, but my Mk 6 Golf tailgate power socket is turned off when the the key is removed — if you power the RVC from there you mayn't be able to open the tailgate without turning the car on first.

And yes, do run the video cable.

Thanks for all the good advice.
I know running cable is best, just looking for a shortcut to ripping all the trim out of a new car with all the annoying squeaks and broken clips to live with .

As usual, this forum is excellent.

Haven't done it on a Tiguan but if its anything like in a MkV Golf (I can't imagine its THAT much different) you can get away with pretty minimal trim removal.
You just need to pull the side panel off the dash on right hand side (you need to do that to get to fuse panel so you won't break anything there.) From there you can thread the cable from the head unit behind the dash to the fusebox area.
Then you can lift the door trim rubbers/kick plate and push the conduit snake under the carpet and along to the back seat floor.
Again lifting the door trim surrounds you can get the cable and get it under the seat foam.
Pull out the seat belt cover and you can get access to the void and into the boot area.
In my case I then went down and out of the cabin through the existing cable grommet as I was wiring to RVC in the license plate, so had to go behind the bumper (bit of a pain as the bumper and valance have to come off).
However if you are wiring to a boot emblem RVC this is actually easier as you only need to remove the boot door trim and thread the cable through the existing cable grommet into the boot void.

I did manage to break one clip, which holds the existing left-hand license plate light in place (this was a mistake as the camera goes in the right-hand light as its angled in to give a straight image on screen).

If you are careful and especially if you have another set of hands to assist with prying things away gently whilst another pulls the cable it should be pretty easy to not break things. I did it by myself and didn't end up with any rattles or squeaks, and I'm no expert.

Would recommend a set of nylon trim removal tools to prevent scratching paint while you pull things apart. Better than using screwdrivers as they are soft and will break before you break stuff in the car.

Good luck, its satifsying when you get something like that done

    Thanks kamold,

My camera is going to be a replacement hatch handle, between the 2 licence plate lights, not the VW badge type.
I'm likely to run 5 audio cables to the boot space as well, initially just for the sub, but if required to replace the head unit amps.
I already have a down firing box sub and 5ch amp from previous car.

I've checked the 12 volt socket in boot space; that turns off with ignition so could use that to turn camera and amp on/off if required.
obviously need to run some heavy power cable for amp itself
Dont recall seeing a trigger output from head unit though.
maybe the amp will audio sense.... Must check.
And the reverse lights should trigger the camera.
There must also be the OEM power cable for the boot release as well if needed.

So I think I will be removing trim.

    Thanks once again.
