Strange RNS510 / CAN BUS issue

    Hi All,

I had a flat battery in my car last week and ever since then I have had nothing but problems with my RNS510. RACV installed a new battery… after turning the car over with the new battery, I had to scan the car and clear all fault codes to get the central electrics to work (windows wouldn't roll down automatically etc..), that was all fixed.

However, with my RNS510, it won't appear at all on my MFD Cluster, it only has the fuel consumption and Telephone "Insert Phone", won't allow for volume control changes at all…

Pressing the MEDIA button (for Hard Drive and MDI) it says 'this function is not available' and pressing PHONE will mute the radio.

I have tried upgrading firmware from 3810 to 4020 (no go). I then formatted the RNS510 (with the special format image) and downgraded back to 2760, no go, same thing. I've also noticed, after rebooting the unit, it won't turn on automatically, I have to manually turn the RNS510 on, the lights around RADIO,MEDIA,PHONE etc.. no longer light up apart from booting up for the very first time. When removing the key from the ignition the unit stays on and will not turn the unit off anymore.

I have a VCDS log with the errors… since it can't see the module at all I am thinking it is an error with the CAN Gateway, or the CAN is stuffed after replacing the battery.

I then decided to take the unit out and remove the cables from the back and re-seat it, and reboot, still made no difference.

I even tried going into the CAN module, long coding and unticking Radio and Telephone, reboot and then re-tick, still not working.

At this point I am thinking something is definitely faulty, whether it be the RNS510 or the CAN, I am not sure.

    Here is a scan log:

Have you seen this issue before as I am trying to work out what the hell is going on?

I have a 2009 VW Golf GTI Pirelli Edition, with an RNS510 Revision B (now downgraded back to 2760).

I would really appreciate any help I could get right now

    Best Regards,

    Dean

It does sound like its most likely a CANbus gateway issue.
The only real way to prove that would be to use a known working CANbus gateway and recode it for your car's features.

Only other thing I can think of to try is this:
Make a note of your features list coding for your CANbus gateway.
As you have already done, remove the tick for telephone and radio and also BAP.
Then remove the keys and lock the car. Wait 5 mins or more, this will let the gateway 'go to sleep'.
Then recode the gateway with the correct settings and see if they 'stick'. If they dont it sounds like the NVD on the gateway may have been buggered by the battery replacement, or something as similarly annoying.

Thanks very much for your response. I just tried all your suggestions above, I locked the doors and left it for a half an hour. Still the same thing. I then copied another GTI Pirelli's CAN BUS settings still not working.

I am thinking about booking it into VW and get a proper assessment as I am really out of ideas.

I can't imagine the RNS being faulty as it has no problems accepting different versions of firmware, as I said the Radio works and the Navigation works but can't 're-calculate' if you go off the original mapped path, so it is as if the unit is fully working but powered and left on the passenger seat i.e. has no communication with the car, which is exactly what the CAN is supposed to do. Obviously none of the volume, next mute buttons work too (which is what the CAN does as well).

    Bummer.
Totally up to you of course but the cheapest fix might be to buy a gateway from a wrecker or off eBay.
If worst comes to worst you can sell it again.
You've already done as much debug as most techs will do other than doing a guided diagnostic using VASpc

Thanks, I'd rather go to VW and get a proper assessment of what it is, once I have exhausted all my troubleshooting (which I have). I'm not a fan of just buying parts that I think it might be, i've done it in the past and it was an expensive exercise, I replaced 3 throttle body's after that I said i'd never do again! It turned out just being a simple cable needing to be replaced (which was part of a recall!)

    Spoke with OP today.....

Seems he may have a case against the battery installer. Problem will be sorted (at a cost). However, I'll let Dean fill in the details.

kamold...I passed your details onto Dean, as a result of your expertise here and our discussions over the phone with a couple of issues I had. Many thanks mate for your input. I know Dean was pleased to have another person's opinion (with such an intimate knowledge of the RNS and CANBUS systems as you have). Kudos to you my friend.

Thanks for the props Steve but you're being too generous....would call my level of knowledge more towards rudimentary than intimate...

    Hi Guys,

Found this thread via a google thread and am having real problems installing RNS-510 in my mk6

Exactly the same problems that are noted in this thread!! Only thing is I haven't changed battery etc, just removed OEM radio and installed the RNS-510 version B

Can anyone shed any light on what could of happened as it doesn't seem to be seen by the canbus!

    Dan

Haha Dan... It's only been a day since I posted, I am booked in for VW on Wednesday. It definitely has something to do with the coding after removing the battery. I am wondering if the Firmware of the unit at the time was that caused it. I too have an RNS-510 version B, was running Firmware 3810 at the time. But since you haven't removed it, it could be a coding issue... Have you checked in VCDS under CAN that Radio [Analog] is ticked?
