My mistake, didn't pay attention to the buttons. Either way, battery issues remain the same, you have to check your CAN-Bus if you want to fit an RNS-510.

Thanks guys. Pickup the car Thursday. Maybe I'm better off going with something aftermarket like the ans or whatever it's called.

hey another question. Is it worth upgrading from the rcd500 to this (RCd310):

I'm thinking it might be a stepping stone to the rns510 as it's only $90 and I've got to save up for the rns

I would say no. A good stepping stone would be to upgrade to the rcd-510. These can be picked up for between $200 -$250. Pretty much look and function like the RNS-510, but without the sat nav and hard disk. It would also be easier to sell the rcd-510 when you are ready to upgrade to the sat nav.

picked up a cheap RCD510. Looks a heap better than the rcd500 I got with the car and gives me the SD card mp3 stuff. Question is how do I find out what canbus version I have so I can tell whether I need an upgrade to stop battery drain issues? Is this something I need to get someone to connect up to the car to tell me or can I find out some other way?

You could go digging inside your dashboard and remove the gateway and see the product number on the sticker. In my car you remove the compartment under the light switch and it's all the way up the back near the firewall.

Have a look here for 'installation guides' as they show how to access the gateway in various cars:

I'm just surprised you haven't already ordered a Polar FIS after reading that

Yes ... but if you can find someone with a VCDS cable and do a scan, it'll take 5 secs to get the part no.
