One thing i can add to this is, seriously unless to buy other speakers at least starting at the $400ish range i personally will not bother changing speakers at all. A few Golf in South Africa have won SQ competitions still running factory speakers. As long as you amp them runn new speaker wiring to them and adjust the EQ. You will be more than happy with the results.

You need to spend heaps to get better speakers than stock.
I changed my fronts as they were starting to crackle with heavy bass.
The thing that makes the Golf sound so good is the way the doors are constructed, they make good boxes.
Yes adding an amp is great they will go a lot louder without sounding like crap. I just wish they had better bass response - but you aint gonna get that with components.
Stock speakers are riveted in - no screws, no thread in the panel either. They are mounted at the bass not the top so you need spacers too.
As Hitman Said, wee installed his Alpine V12 in his previous GTI. Running around 115WRMS into factory speakers. I had the fronts cross-over set at around 63 - 75HZ and the rears funny enough i set at 50HZ but cut the top off at 400HZ, so it onyl filled the bottom end with out pulling the imaging of the sound to the back of the car.
Hope this helps.

Yeah I bet you never gave them full tilt from the amp though. I have given similar, 40WRMS speakers where given 150WRMS and didn't blow but I can garantee they would of if they would take the full power over a period of time.
I must agree though that the factory system sounds quite good. The problem I bet you have Justcuzin is that the surrounds are probably coming loose. I now when I replaced mine it had a damaged surround on one of them and it didn't take much to further destroy it.
I now have Boston SL's in the front, rears are still stock and HP 200Hz @ 12db/oct as I have a fully sick subwoofer bro.

Yeah not to get to picky here but if you where to put your outputs and get a reading I bet:
1: Your Alpine amp makes more than 115WRMS
2: Whatever it makes you are only giving half of that maximum to the speakers.
As you said its all about how they tuned. I'm guessing you didn't use a clipping indicator to check when the amp goes above 5%THD and hook your speaker up to that...
Hook up you RE's which are a decent set up and watch yourself go for the gains to turn it up... and better yet, listen to them handle that power.
