    Question slow reversing camera, ssd?

    I'm already backed out of the garage and onto the road well before the RNS-510 has booted up and shows the reversing camera image on my 2013 Passat.

    Am wondering if anyone who has done an SSD harddisk conversion could verify if the unit boots up faster and shows the reversing camera image faster?

    That actually sounds like the hard drive is on the fritz... It shouldn't be that slow, unless you absolutely belt it backwards out the garage.

    Also, are the maps on an SD, or loaded to the HDD??

    It's the maps that came with the car, so it would be on the HDD. There's no SD card inserted. Have you done the SSD conversion yourself? It easily takes 15 seconds to boot it up, if the car hasn't been used for an hour or so.

    No, I haven't done the conversion but in theory, SSD being a faster drive with a higher read write speed, should speed things up, the RNS used to annoy the out of me, so I got rid of it.

    What seems to the be a big contributor to the issue is the RNS processor speed being 2008 technology.

    Try Four things for me;
    1. Perform a reset or factory reboot
    2. Ensure you have the latest firmware.
    3. Don't leave any DVD's or CD's in the stacker.
    4. Turn off audible beep response when buttons are pushed.

    If the RNS is getting slower and slower, I would suggest swapping the hard drive out, as mechanical hard drives are prone to a short life span with heavy use/ bumps of the car.

    Hdd only contains maps and speech. So faster drive won't change boot time. The rest of the system is stored in flash on the board. Only way to make that faster is with a newer unit that has faster CPU etc. If it's slower than it used to be then that's a different story. Might try loading latest firmware to refresh all the files, but if there is flaky flash you could have issues which may result in a failed unit...

    I was under the impression that the RNS loads the maps on startup, in theory if it does, then the drive would contribute to the slow boot? If not, then there you go!

    Yes it does load maps, but before it does that it starts other subsystems. The start order is determined by the state at shutdown. Eg if you are on radio then radio is started before media and vice versa. Camera is started as soon as possible.
    You can open the drivers door and put the keys in to acc while you are getting into the car, then you are giving the unit a bit of time to startup before you are ready to move.
