    Sat Nav

Hey guys, newbie question here. I have searched the forum but cant seem to find a clear answer.

I am working out which options i am going to order with my new roc. $2500 for the nav seems pretty pricey. I have seen RNS units going for around $1000 with sat nav. Just wanted to hear some opinions on how easy the sat nav antenna is to install, and if anyone has a trusted source to purchase the units, or should i just pay the extra cash to get factory fitted.

Your experience will be much appreciated.

Obviously its a personal choice but I say dont bother with it. I use navigation maybe 5 times a week and I work on the road in Melb - so I use Google Navigation via BT from my smartphone. The fact that goolge integrates with my online google identity means I have maps saved and various other personalisations. It is also always evolving which I cannot say for sure the RNS would be.

I have a small cradle down near the 12V outlet so the phone is always charging (I found that space to be useless otherwise)

I dropped that extra cash on an audio upgrade that goes way beyond the facotry option, but you could use it for other things (put it in the bank for your next set of tyres )

If you would be really heavily reliant on navigation and the visual directions in particular then it might be worthwhile.

I also use the navigation app on my phone (iphone). What's annoying is the nav instruction isn't piped through the car's factory Bluetooth. Is there a setting on the phone or on the car's Bluetooth that can be changed so I can hear the instruction via the car's speakers?

The RNS 510 is not just for Navigation Its a media centre DVD player you can store all your music on its hard drive,
You can buy off Ebay for less than $1,000 and install it easily and there are plenty of forum members who can help with the coding.

Sounds like a plan! Where does the antenna need to be mounted?

There's also the ANS-810 I offer in my sig, about $300 cheaper than the cheapest eBay OEM solution. Quick summary is that it has much better map system and better video capabilities plus a much bigger 8 inch screen, but at the moment lacks a bit in music browsing and have some small bugs, though the software is under active development and I have a direct line to the manufacturer's technician.

Whatever you choose, in all honesty getting it from the dealer shouldn't even be considered with all your options. You can source an RNS-510 locally without eBay for about $1200, with professional install for about $200 more. That's still less than half the dealer price and you're doing everything local without you lifting a finger.

Do not buy from the Irish seller on ebay (iconicelectronics, formerly damian69). They take your money and don't deliver. Then say they don't have tracking info so, 'they can't do anything'.
