RNS510 (or similar) in mk Mk4 Bora

    Hi all

SWMBO has decreed the AVC9000 in our Golf is not up to snuff for her 40,000 songs on her ipod (admittedly, the AVC's ipod interface is terrible) and she wants an RNS510 or similar fitted.

    What I'd like to do

So I searched a few places, and google said to go here:-
    MK5 Sat Nav on MK4 Possible??? - uk-mkivs

    which lead me to:
VWnavi.com - which had heaps of Mk4 links but they all went nowhere other than a quick mention of a CANbus simulator. When i googled that i got nowhere.

So, would a mk5-type stereo like an AVC (or even an RNS510 if i get creative with finances) fit? I imagine thats a yes, so next one is how difficult would it be? Is there a stereo shop in Sydney that would have the expertise?

Other option is to sell the AVC (any takers, she is going cheap) and get a Mk4-shaped GPS unit.

Anyone got any hints, tips or ideas?

Get yourself a double din pioneer nav unit. It will be easier to fit and be more fully featured than the rns.

Definitely check out both the Pioneer and Alpine options, both have iPod interfaces and on screen control like an iPod itself. I have an Alpine and it fits really well in the Bora, comes with frame too that fits perfectly.

Note this unit does not have GPS, I didn't want it so specifically picked this unit as it gave me iPod control and reverse camera input. It does not even have a CD/DVD drive in this unit. Alpine do other models that have more features.

    get a aftermarket,
i love the ipod interface on mine, only dislike is the name display isnt long enough.
it handles reverse cameras, gps, movies, blahblahblah.
i got a pioneer 7" flip out (cant remember the model name) but that was 2-3 yrs ago, so im sure you can get something 10x better now

interestingly, I did some more reading and it seems that a CAN bus emulator/simulator are pretty commonly bought for Audis to fit aftermarket stereos. I haven't figured out why yet, but bear with me. It appears that if I can get the RNS/RCD to think its in a Mk5 or better then all will be well. I'm determined to fit either a AVC or (preferred) a RCD/RNS unit as they are VAG and look better.

Will they physically fit though? The pics I have seen of the RNS units seem to show rounded corners whereas the MK4 has square corners so you may end up with a not so factory fit look.

It seems the Tiguan RCD/RNS fit just right as they're a bit wider and squarer. You do lose the look of the two side panels, as in they get interrupted by the RCD/RNS units but thatys ok by me.

Nothing is impossible, and I don't want to spend a fortune, but I am sure this can be done. Maybe if I source the parts somebody can fit it for me, sure, but at the same time I am wanting to push forward. Easier doesn't always mean better right?
