RNS510 navi. in 06 TDI golf.

Want to put a RNS 510 in my MK5 06 TDI Golf.

heard something about needing a different canbus? (have no clue how to get one, what it is or how to replace it )

Really like the factory look so want to go for that instead of the pioneer or jvc sorta thing.

but is it worth it? i dont know anything about canbus and stuff so can someone do it for me? where do i have to go? how much? how long?

Its the CANBus gateway that you are referring to. It needs to be a minimum revision in order to prevent a potential battery drain issue whilst the car is off.

Is it worth it? Very subjective, has been discussed to death all over the interwebs. Totally your decision.

I'm sure there is someone in Melbourne who can help you out with install for a slab. There may be a few Melbournians left don't who only drink fair trade organic lattes

Thanks kamold. yeh so would i have to update the canbus if i get like an aftermarket touch headunit?

and also do you know where i can get one and how much?

3rd party units are an unknown quantity unfortunately. I have a Chinese 8' NAV unit in my wife's MkV however I had already upgraded the CANbus gateway as I had previously installed an RCD310.

Your first step will be to do a scan with VCDS (ask your friendly local VCDS cable owner near you) and find out the part number and revision of the gateway in your car. If it is already up to date, you have no issue. If it is older and you do decide to install a 3rd party head unit, you can just install it and see if your battery is being drained if you can afford to recharge your battery, or just get a newer one off ebay and install it.
