Out of curiosity, do you know what the build date was?

I saw my dealer today and asked about the maps, I asked if i would be getting v3, they said yes they will upgrade it if needed (car due by end of the month). Not sure if they just ment on the system or disks as well. I will be checking and asking for the disk also i think.

Read somewhere that it is possible to download speed and red light camera locations as points of interest even if there is no aural notification. Anyone know where to find the data and process involved.
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

Here is a comprehensive guide to adding POIs (including camera locations). This one is for Skoda Columbus sat-nav which is the same as RNS510
Adding POIs to the Skoda Superb Columbus SatNav V4 Maps
    MY10 Skoda Octavia RS | 2.0TSI | DSG |Candy White | Liftback | Xenons | Rear Wiper | Columbus | Skoda Bluetooth
(Ross Tech Micro-Can - can assist with basic mods, configuring bluetooth & Sat-Nav and running scans - appreciation in terms of a six pack is always welcome!)

Further to this discussion, this morning's (9th July) Melbourne Herald-Sun's motoring supplement has two letters on satnav upgrade cost — the one from a Touareg owner is an eye-opener.

$4750 for the satnav and now $1900 for the V3 maps DVD! — and Golf owners feel put upon?

Herald-Sun say they intend to take this matter up with car companies — it's more than time some-one with a bit of influence did, these 'upgrades' are plainly ripoff, and as has been pointed out before, many of the 'new' roads mentioned for V3 are in fact on V2 (I live close to Eastlink, which VW say is part of the V3 upgrade, and its full length was definitely on my original V2.)

I now have the V3 upgrade on my RNS510 (installed free by the dealer, no DVD — might see if I can back up the hard drive one day...) and can say that some of the more glaring errors have been fixed, but none of the rural roads I've previously commented on as missing have been added, even though our little portable unit (with the older V15 maps, not the new V16 that's used for VW's V3) has them all.

It's bad enough that VW (and the industry in general) can get away with charging many times what the portable competition do for upgrades, but to then use cut-down and therefore incomplete maps...

Incidentally, the first (and so far only) time I used the new maps in anger the thing got lost at the end of the journey (only by about 50 metres, but still turned me into the wrong street and then insisted I turn left when in fact a right turn followed by a left was needed — and it's not a new suburb, it's all correct in a 10-year-old Melways.)

My tomtom XL340 portable unit is a much better GPS unit than the RNS510. Living in Sydney with the number of speed cameras the audible alert function is really worth while. Also lots more surrounding street names are shown on the tomtom unit as well together with current speed and all number of other info.

Getting on topic I noticed on my recent trip up the NSW mid north coast that there are many times that I was 'off road' and my unit has the V3 maps loaded onto it.

picked up our tiguan on the weekend. Salesperson showed me the V3 maps disc still in packaging, took it out and loaded it into the system whilst we went over the car. Put the disc in the glovebox. She informed me that when updates are available VWA will contact me asking confirmation of my address and if i'm still in possession of the car. Once this is confirmed they will send out the new maps to me for free.
