Actually, I don't have a problem. It is hard to recognise sarcasm sometimes, without the oral sounds and visual body language to support said sarcasm. To me, the initial post didn't seem "clear to all and sundry" that the post was in the wrong thread. I'm new to forums in general, not just this one, and am still learning about the versioning of the RNS510 system hence I asked the follow-up question. Oh the joys of non-visual communication, always likely to piss someone off or upset someone when no malice was ever intended. What fun this is.

Anyway, back to topic, I'd love to hear if anyone can help me out with Post Item #10 above. Does anyone out there know the answers to some of these queries, or can shed some more light? Thanks.

VW Australia have advised me the official definitive position is:

"...our dealers are required to hand over the discs at the time of purchase and the customer is responsible for the purchase of new discs as required."

There is no OEM version, licenses are single END user per disc, and a disc is required for each install, which then becomes the property of the end user.

    Talking Thanks. A good start.

Thanks Swallowtail. Although I'm still waiting for them to get back to me, it's good to know what their "official definitive position" is. Thanks for your time in tracking this down. Much appreciated.

Now we've cleared up that part, back to the original thread. If others out there know of:

    • When will Map Version 3 be officially released by VW Australia?
    • What new features (if any) will Map Version 3 have (as compared to Map Version 2) or is it just simply new map data?
    • How much will Map Version 3 cost, if purchased outright with a new RNS510 system? (I'm assuming nothing as would come with system)
    • How much will Map Version 3 cost, if purchased as an upgrade for an existing RNS510 owner (I hear prices ranging from $300 to $1,200!?!)
    • How frequently can we update Map Version 3?
    • How will the update of Map Version 3 be handled, e.g. via downloading from Internet or via some small fee subscription service?
    • What are some of the key technical details for Map Version 3, if any.

    ...then let us all know.

    Cheers.

    • When will Map Version 3 be officially released by VW Australia?

My local dealer's parts department (thanks Sara) checked this yesterday, and as of now they have no official information on this.

    • What new features (if any) will Map Version 3 have (as compared to Map Version 2) or is it just simply new map data?

New map data, and also some extra features - I believe voice control of destination entry. Possibly also speed limit data for display by the new firmware.

    • How much will Map Version 3 cost, if purchased outright with a new RNS510 system? (I'm assuming nothing as would come with system)

Buying an RNS510 from a dealer, the maps should come included.

    • How much will Map Version 3 cost, if purchased as an upgrade for an existing RNS510 owner (I hear prices ranging from $300 to $1,200!?!)

As it has not been released, who knows, but V2 is $1100 - $1200.

    • How frequently can we update Map Version 3?

The only way you can update it with mapping data is to wait for the next release - V4, whenever that comes...

    • How will the update of Map Version 3 be handled, e.g. via downloading from Internet or via some small fee subscription service?

There is no update service available that I am aware of.

    • What are some of the key technical details for Map Version 3, if any.

Whereis V16 maps, and some features as noted above...

Can anyone who received their DVD at delivery remember whether the DVD case was sealed or unsealed?
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

My V2 maps were definitely not sealed. They were in the glovebox when I took delivery. If the new V3 maps are $1200 then there is no way I'll upgrade. Even the BMW maps I bought for my E90 were only a bit over $300. Roguery!

    Both cases unsealed.

1 disc was in the DVD drive

1 disc was in the DVd case.

    Wrapped DVDS

I have noted that V2 RNS510 maps offered on ebay have often been described as "Wrapped". It is fairly widespread practice for new software to be shrink wrapped/sealed to indicate that it has been unopened/unused.

Was wondering if dealers use "your" disk to load map software to your car. Doesn't look like it, especially where map DVD is not provided on purchase.

Hence the reason for my question as to wrapped or not.

Any chance of a poll with DVD provided/DVD not provided options? No need to involve dealer names. May give us a picture of how widespread non supply of DVD is

    Start a Poll, HOW?

I didn't get a disk when I picked up my car, so can't comment on that. However, I did get a DVD in an "unsealed" plastic case from a kind person offering to help me as my dealer (at the time) wasn't able (or willing) to.

I'll support this! I'm new to forums, so how does one start a poll?
