I think this might be a bug.
I have seen it happen from time to time with my iPhone on the MDI.
I cannot help out as it does not really both me and its random..
Just picked up our new Golf Mk VI GTI on Saturday and have a question about an issue we are experiencing with the RNS510 / MDI / iPod.
The RNS510 is the apparently new version with the voice control. We have factory fitted MDI installed as well.
The problem we are having is with our iPod Nano and the track name display on the head unit.
If we let songs play through in their entirety the track name updates and shows the name of the next track when it starts playing as it is supposed to.
The issue occurs when we skip to the next track using either the head unit or steering wheel controls. If we skip a track after it has started playing, the name of the next track updates and it begins playing however when that track finishes and the next one starts the track name does not update and remains as the previously played track name, regardless of how many other tracks play. ie the name of the song that was playing when that song was skipped remains on the display until the iPod is unplugged and replugged.
In summary, the problem -
1) Using "Mix" mode on head unit to shuffle all songs on either 4th Gen iPod, 5th Gen ipod or iPhone 3GS
2) Listen to track "A"
3) Decide you don't like track "A" so use either the head unit or the steering wheel controls to skip to the next track
4) Track "B" starts playing. Listen to track "B" in it's entirety.
5) Track "B" finishes, track "C" begins to play. Screen on both RNS510 and MFD still show track "B" details.
6) Track "C" finishes, track "D" starts playing. Displays STILL show track "B" details.
7) So on and so on until you unplug and replug the iPod or iPhone...
Sometimes the system will let you skip songs a couple of times before exhibiting this behaviour. It doesn't always start on the first track skip but it will start very soon if tracks are skipped a couple of times.
Can anyone provide some insight?

Just a suggestion on something you can try, if your Ipod has gapless playback or a crossfade option, try turning it off and see if it makes any difference. Some ipods will let you switch it off in the Playback menu, some others might make you do it via iTunes.

Did your MDI interface with standard usb connection cable work with your iPOD plugged into it via its own standard cable that you use to plug an iPOD into the computer "usb to iPOD white cable"?, or did you need to replace the supplied MDI to usb cable that comes with the car with a different one at yet more additional expense?
Picked up the car today - and the MDI interface states that neither my old nor new iPOD nano is compatible with the MDI interface, nor does it charge the battery in the iPOD. I only have the RNS310 system+MDI, not the RNS510.
Thanks,
You need a special MDI to iPod adaptor cable that you have to buy from your dealer. It is an extra cost via spare parts or negotiated as part of the deal when you buy the car.
Sorry for the bad news but you are up for an extra expense unless you can argue the point with the dealer that they should have told you that another cable was needed to make an iPod or iPhone work....
Thanks for your comments. I have since found that if I copy songs from my iTunes library over to a USB stick, then that works fine. Given that I can pick up an 8 Gig USB stick for just over $20 - I'll just buy one of those and use it that way.
Regards,
Just buy the proper ipod cable and it will work fine . Perhaps ask the dealer if he led you to believe your ipod would work with it as.
If they charged $20 for the cable, I would. But at $90 - that is highway robbery for a cable. Much cheaper to spend $25 on an 8 Gig USB stick. The MDI interface simply reads the music on an iPOD as if it were a USB stick anyway - so I suppose its more about the cost of the cable not making any sense - and the annoying inability to use my own iPOD cables at the moment. The sales person did say an additional cable would be needed, but I thought, why pay $90 for another one to leave in the car when I already have 3 of them. I thought she was just referring to normal USB - iPOD connectors, as it would make sense to have a spare one live in the car, as you don't necessarily have the white cable with you everywhere, it is usually attached to a USB port on the computer. I happened to have a spare one - and I thought she was referring to one of these.
One of the dealers on here sells them for $60.
The MDI is most of the expense why not get a cable instead of having to copy to two devices for portable music? Although may be handy to leave in the car but USB doesn't support gapless playback or Apple Lossless whereas ipod does.
I haven't tried plugging in the ipod without the proper cable, may explain why it wasn't working PROPERLY and not designed to work that way.
