From what I've gathered so far, FW 3810 will partition, but FW 39XX don't. So yes ... you do need to load FW 3810 first to get the separate POI partition, if you want the higher Beta versions.

At this very moment, FW 2760 is the only one that will support POIs currently on both the V3 and supposed V4 map.
It will also read a modified map disk and importing pre-loaded destinations on a SD card.

So from a fully functional map perspective, stick to FW 2760 for now!

However Maverick has mentioned FW 2840 as the last official release in the FW 2XXX series.
But links are nowhere to be found at the moment!

I have FW 3890 + Map version 7005 on my RNS510 (with no working POI's)

I'm seriously considering getting a V4 maps DVD and rolling back from FW 3890 to FW 2760 like you've said. However, what are the other differences to the workings of the unit with the two FW's?

Based on two weeks of testing FW 3930, my verdict is the later versions have nicer screens and graphics, especially with icons.

A more refined OPS display showing the middle parking sensors separate to the outer ones.

Technically the ability to add POIs via SD card (if our fcuken maps actually supported this)!

So you'll lose all that cosmetic changes, if you revert to FW 2760.

On the up side however, FW 2760 will give you back all the POIs that came with the map disk, plus the ability to append your own POIs to it.

You do this by adding these onto the map disk's existing folder/POI structure and burning the modified map onto a new disk.

It will also allow you to prepare and save your favourite destinations onto a SD card and import them into the HDD or use them direct from the card.

I've certainly rolled back to FW 2760 based on the above reasons!

Now one word of warning though ... naturally D units are suppose to run on FW 3XXX.
I am unsure what will happen if you run FW that is designed for older units.

My experience so far is with a C unit punching above its weight like Warney and running with a flashier Hurley!

    Thanks for your help.

I did not know my unit was a D unit, how did you?

I don't know for sure! But it's based on the fact that you're currently on FW 3890.

Now if it came like that and bought from Lithuania, then I'm 90% confident.

But can only be 100% sure via a VCDS scan.

I've been following this thread, and although I haven't been into the directory structure of the RNS510 or the map disc, by the sounds of it, the referencing to directory locations is made by the firmware on the unit, not the structure of the disc.

In theory this would mean that if the internal POIs don't work on 3810 if you added new ones into the new directory location they should be available. If this is the case, is it possible to BT a euro map disc that is compatible with 3810 then create a butchered modified V4 disc with the correct structure to support the new firmware and POIs.

By the sounds of it all the information is there, it's just the way that it has been structured that is causing issues.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

The actual problem is even the internal POIs on don't work on FW 3XXX, let alone adding new ones!

    Anything is possible (in theory)!

I know that on V7.1 Euro maps, internal POIs work when running FW 3XXX. But not V7.0 maps.

So any butchering should be based on a V7.1 map.

My scouring of o/seas forums, ppl refer to the requisite folder/database structure as "ebd". Whatever that means!

FWIW, I've asked the creator of POInspect0r whether it's possible to convert the internal POIs on old maps (like our Australian maps) to the new format. His response was it's not possible to decrypt the IDX file on the older maps to re-compile them.

But if you can decrypt the series of IDX files (which is how they're stored on our Australian map disk) and be able to convert them to either a URL or ASC file format, then let me know!

    Sanctified.

Took the tumble and loaded "V4" as per our ebayer description. All good. Recognised it as an 'update', asked me to save or temporary use. 20 minutes later: Saved. Sanctified.

Will check out some of the 2010 roadworks around Canberra and see if it knows the difference and report back.
