    RNS and MDI

I have installed an MDI (original VW kit) into my Passat with RNS510. Although the installation manual says it needs to be coded, it still recognises and works properly, only problem is it sounds crap.... distorted. Maybe coding will fix it, anyone had the same experience?

    Yes, I've come across this.

You'll need to go back and check the wiring at the plug on the rear of the radio unit that contains the grey, green, and yellow wires. You'll need to configure them as per the installation instructions.

Also, it's worth checking the aux-in level, and that the EQ is turned of in your device.

However, the MDI will need to be coded.

I had a bit of a brain fade, of course it was the Aux-in level control, it was set to high position... I have re-adjusted it to low as even medium was distorting at upper volume levels. Low setting is great with plenty of headroom. It is interesting to note also that you dont need to get the system reset with VAGCOM. All functions are operating great.

I've got my AUX level on LOW which is suppose to be the best setting (ie least distortion). It may be quieter than radio but I'm not fussed.

Works pretty well with my ipod and lossless, not much difference to CD..

As mentioned the MDI doesn't require any coding.

You do need to code the MDI, just because it works doesn't mean it's coded correctly. The CAN bus controller needs to know the MDI is installed to ensure correct operation of the car in particular areas like power delivery.

The MDI module is still a bit buggy, This morning the iPod was flat and stuck in disk mode. Perhaps it's staying powered on overnight.
