Just rang the parts department at Solitair in Adelaide and asked for a price for the maps DVD. I was quoted approx. $1200. ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!! Right now they have no dates on a new version 3 (vers.16) but when it comes out later this year, it will probably cost the same. This will be my first and last RNS510.
You will find that price to be the normal cost from most places.
That and the fact that you aren't allowed to make copies of the dvd.
That is why i am going with the Zenec unit.
It costs less, has a variety of different functions, a usb port for external hardrive connection and maps can be updated if you know where to look on the internet.
Where is the logic in what you just said?
You're going with the Zenec unit partially because you can "borrow" the maps.
You won't go with the RNS 510 because of the cost of the maps.
I really fail to see any logic in your comments, surely if you're prepared to "borrow" one set of maps you would do the same for the other unit
And the Zenec unit has no maps available for Australia IIRC so I don't see how you could "borrow" what doesn't exist!

Mmmmm.. I was told something very similar by my dealer here in WA just this week (March 2010).
Question: Why does this seem harder than it should be? Is it really that hard to give the DVD to existing customers? Is it really that hard for VW (or whomever) to update the RNS510 map data frequently and re-issue a small piece of plastic (i.e. the DVD) to existing loyal customers for either no cost or a very small fee. This would make our driving experience the more enjoyable..
Sorry to all, maybe it's just me, but I believe the little things count and providing a car with a Sat. Nav. System with no easy way to update the map data (or update the system software) is just plain strange in today's hi-tech world, in my opinion anyways..
VW
My RNS510 is a year old and no speed zone. It's a feature I'd live to have as well as updated maps. I'm guessing VW will charge for the update. How much do you think?
ropes ... sounds like dealer reverted back to an older map.
Only the current map shows speed limits (even though wrong speed).
But at least has a more up to date (but still old) Sensis map.
You should check which version has been loaded on your RNS510. Current version is CD_7679
But I would suggest your complaint about wrong speed limits has actually cost you the loss of all speed limits and the latest Australian map available.

Yep you are correct it did cost me the speed limits. I took the car to another branch of the same dealer and they reckon the map is the current version, but I don't agree it looks different. They did tell me that my unit will be updated for free when I take it for service. And after a bun fight with the dealer I bought the car from, they have finally ordered me the software disk. I suspect they got told to give it to me as I they could not make me drop the issue and I had VW on their back. My question is, what did they do with the original disk that should have come with the unit????
Link to download latest V5 map (CD_7679) is actually within this sticky (post #115):

But just gotta put up with the 120km speed limit on motorways and occasional mix up in the announcement of left and right when exiting motorways.

The dealer reckons that they will upgrade the software at the time of service and it is free for those of us who has the RNS510 as OEM install or dealer fitted. I was told to simply ask for the software to be upgraded when I drop it in for service. According to this guy, updates are normally released at 6 month intervals. But I can't confirm this as my car is very new.
