    The dealer reckons that they will upgrade the software at the time of service and it is free for those of us who has the RNS510 as OEM install or dealer fitted. I was told to simply ask for the software to be upgraded when I drop it in for service. According to this guy, updates are normally released at 6 month intervals. But I can't confirm this as my car is very new.

    You can update the firmware yourself as described here:

    You might need to reload the maps after. So you'd need the disk for that. Make sure your battery has a full charge as it takes about 60-90 minutes.

    Got a final answer on my software disk. According to the dealer VW does not ship the disks with the vehicle as most owners do not want the disk. They will, however supply the disk if an owner requests a copy. My disk is to be sent to me by courier this week. So you beauty! I get the power to set the unit up how I want. So in this instance it pays to push dealers to give you the disk.
