So, I don't have access to VCDS but I took the car for a service and asked the service tech to let me know what hardware and firmware version I have. Also asked them to update it to the latest.
When I picked my car up, they gave me a printout of VAS5051B and circled the result "C_EU_7.112_t1001" which is for Siemens-VDO SW version.
Can anyone tell me what hardware version or firmware version is this?
If not, can someone please point me to the directions so I can print them out and take them to the service tech? I'm not sure if he is clueless or just unhelpful.
Also, the service agent said (after much prodding from me) that there is a newer version firmware (which reads the SDHC cards), but they were told to stop installing them by VW because it was causing RNS510 to stop working properly. Therefore, they didn't want to upgrade my firmware. Would that be right?

I'm not sure on the hardware side of things but I'm pretty sure the techs only have an official firmware they use.... if you want to upgrade you can download the latest and diy, best thing is too study up on it and then make the decision.

If you decide your not too comfortable with it maybe there is someone local to you that has the disk, and can help you through it.
