Ok lets explain it a bit better
The HDD holds the music and the maps The chip on the motherboard holds the firmware as in most devices.
The CD drive is what you use to insert the data for both the firmware and the maps etc.
You need the CD to work as there is no other way to load the info.
If you havent tried a new one do so. If it doesnt work you have a more serious problem and formatting the HDD wont fix anything except you will lose the maps and any music.
The HDD only has Maps, Music and POI files on it NO FIRMWARE

thanks i understand it a lot better now.
i have ordered a new cd drive. I will let you know if it works. But if it doesnt work, is there software and a cable set to reflash the motherboard because i can let it do by a shop, so there has to be a way right?
-
No, you would need a new main board or the tools and expertise to get a eeprom dump from a good board and reflash yours on a bench

okay thanks i will use the cd drive on a another broken unit then in the future or resell it. But can you explain to me please what the tools called that i need
-
If you aren't already familiar with EEPROM readers, and soldering surface mount chips then you're better off buying a new mainboard or a whole new unit.

No there are no guides that I am aware of, there may be some people closer to you who have the experience, perhaps try on the vwnavi forums which are EU based.
