    RNS-510 Radio jumping stations

    Hello there to all,

I have a 2010 Passat & I opted to get the RNS-510 audio system factory installed. Navigation is also installed on this unit.
Right from word go, I have had problems with the FM tuner wanting to change station just after start-up
My favourite radio station in Melbourne is Triple J which occupies frequency 107.5
This is programmed in a favourite number 6.
Around 70% of the time I start my car, I get to listen to 107.5 for around 30-90 seconds, then the radio will change radio stations to something that may not even be programmed in! Something I have noticed though, is that it has a tendency to pick a radio station that has REG NO# after the radio station name/frequency.
I have now taken the car 4 times to Volkswagen in South Yarra & they have updated the firmware god only knows how many times, yet the fault still exists.

Has anybody experienced this fault before & what was the cause.

Hope someone can help out, as VW sure as heck seem to have no idea!

    Tony

Does it do it if you use a CD, or MP3s etc?
Also, in the settings for the radio, you can select whether the "next" and "previous" selects programmed stations or just the next frequency (I'm remembering this setting from the top of my head... it might not be the next frequency, but the next station from the scan list, rather than your programmed stations).

The reason I ask these 3 questions, is maybe the fault is not with the RNS-510, but with buttons on the steering wheel, or one of the cables etc. If changing the radio setting effects the problem (i.e. it goes to your previous/next programmed station rather than a random one), or if it also happens with CDs/MP3s, then to me that'd indicate it's not the RNS510.

I have a feeling this is the traffic option! I had the same in my RCD-310, and i had to press the TP button to turn it off, i think this button is called Traffic on yours. See if that works Do you hear a beep too?

Have similar problem on the RCD500 unit in my '06 Passat.Sometimes can't tune any station, jumps stations,or locks on to one station when it does work.CD plays fine. Convinced myself its a fault in the tuner section. Any comments?

I'm having this problem too. Start up the car and Triple J comes on like it should. In 15 - 20 seconds, the radio often switches to Nova. This is a jump from Preset 6 back to Preset 3. It's as though Preset 3 is the 'default' (but there is no setting to dictate this).

    To answer Corey's questions:
-It doesn't just do it in Radio mode, it does it anywhere. Sometimes the Media section is flaky too. Eg: if the RNS boots up in Radio mode, the car will sometimes change to Preset 3 after 15 seconds. If RNS boots up in Media mode, the car will sometimes change from HDD to Aux after 15 seconds.
-For me, the 'next and previous' behaviour adjustment setting is set to flick between presets, not the scan list.
    -Firmware recently upgraded by dealer.

Ofcourse, i've just realised how to 'solve' my problems. Change Radio Preset 3 to Triple J, and turn the Aux input off. Solved! (sorta).

Thanks for the replies above guys.
I have since had the whole unit replaced & the fault is still there yet it does not seem to be happening as often.
The fault is isolated only to the radio station hopping, however I have never put any form of CD into the unit.
The left/right buttons on the steering wheel change between the preset stations (not the stations in the list)
As for the traffic thing, yeah, I do have a sneaking suspicion that this is where the problem may lie. Down here in Melbourne when I press the Traffic button is comes up with an empty list. I have also requested that the TPP (traffic program) be removed. It is almost like they have only partially removed this function & it still kicks in from time to time.
I used to live in the UK a few years back & if you turned on the TP often the radio would jump when a traffic report was being broadcast, which was fine, however there were quite a lot of "Pirate" TP broadcasters broadcasting all sorts of rubbish over there. When this feature was turned off there was no problem.
In all, it has been a pretty horrid experience with South Yarra VW, I felt like they were really trying to dodge responsibility.

I deleted the preset the radio jumps to and replaced it with something i actually like... but it still jumps to the crappy station. Thoughts:
-Even though TP is off in all settings, the crappy station is the one that does beam out Suna TP info (though it isnt RNS510 compatible anyway). I wonder if something is making it jump to a TP broadcast it can't understand and isn't set to look for.
-The station it jumps to appears as No.1 in the 'Station List' view. Maybe it only jumps to No.1 in the list. I can't figure out how to change the order...

I know this is an old thread, but I'm wondering if anyone has a solution?

My radio sometimes jumps to NOVA when I start the car. Very occasionally it will jump while driving.
I only really listen to Triple J (99.3) and had that in position 6. NOVA was set to position 3 and that is where it would jump too. I changed position 3 to also be Triple J. Fixed..... for about a week, now it just skips all presets and still jumps to NOVA.

Previously I had tried to turn off all the traffic/TP options.

I don't use the cd/dvd or memory card as input, but I do use Bluetooth sometimes and it hasn't ever changed from that to NOVA.

Some radios have a feature where it will search for another radio station with the same name on a different frequency when the signal strength drops.

This is completely useless here of course, so is best turned off.
