No one done it? I assume the install is the same for any model golf MKV ....
Just wondering if anyone has a good link with pics to install the RNS-510 in a R32 MKV? Also where is the best place to mount the GPS antenna inside the dash for signal? Do you need to tape it so it doesn't rattle or it just sits wedged in there sumhow?

I don't know how similar the MkV R32 dash is to the Tiguan dash, but here's a good picture guide to installing the RNS510 in the Tiguan. It should at least give you an idea of how to approach it anyway.

How does one go about upgrading the standard stereo in the Mk5 R32 to the RNS-510?
Is it possible to purchase it from Volkswagen? Can it be bought elsewhere or even overseas without compatibility issues?
Does it really cost $2-$3k?
Hey Lukey,
I only had the factory head unit (RCD 310 ?) installed in my GT when I bought it. I purchased an aftermarket unit which did just about everything but it still didn't fully integrate with the VW system so I decided to purchase a used RNS 510. Here's a link to the eBay store if you're interested. Mine cost just under AUD$1,100 delivered to the door.

Thanks Russ.
That certainly looks like a good price, and it sounds as though you had a positive experience with that particular seller.
In regards to the installation, did you find this to be straightforward and cheap (if you paid an installer)?
Hey Airofu,
I installed an RNS 510 in my 08 GT TDI Golf. Looking at pics of the MKV R32 dash it looks identical to mine. I used an install guide that was originally posted on here to remove the old unit and install the new, it's a pretty easy DIY process as long as you take your time and don't get too heavy handed with the plastic trim when removing it. The GPS antenna can be attached to any flat metal surface you can find somewhere at the top of the dash opening. I had an aftermarket unit installed a few months earlier and the installer actually attached a small metal plate to the underneath of the vent assembly (pic 3)

Mate if you find a decent installer it shouldn't take them any longer than an hour all up to remove the old and install the new (under $100). I personally wasn't game to touch the dash on these things at first but since doing the RNS 510 install myself it really is easy as, as long as you take your time and don't get too physical with the plastic trim removal. Most of the trim on the top part of the dash (ie vent, vent assembly etc...) removes from the front side first (closest to the windscreen) once your past that bit it's all pretty easy and then plug and play for the rest of it. There are a couple of things you will need to consider if you DIY and one is where to mount the GPS antenna (unless you have a factory fitted working shark fin aerial) I had another aftermarket unit installed prior to the RNS and the installer attached a small metal plate to the vent assembly from underneath and the GPS antenna (being magnetic) attaches to it. The other thing is the antenna connections to the rear of the RNS 510, you'll probably find you have 2 antenna connections coming from the car wiring but they won't both fit onto the back of the headunit unless you either purchase an adapter from VW (around $50 ?) or carefully remove one of the plastic clips from the end of the one of the cables and then try to secure it so it doesn't pop out. I opted for latter and used insulation tape around the connector and then taped it to the other cable so it can't fall off. Putting it all back together is much easier.
The first link is an installation guide and the 2nd is to do with the antenna connections -

Russ59 thats a great install guide. Do you know the lateset gpd head unit available for the golf is? I found a few on eBay in Europe. Some say version B and one says version C. I rang VW and was quoted $4500 installed for the "New" version that is optioned out for the mkVI gti. Would that be the same or newer do you think?
