Karmold fitted an RNS 510 to My Superb a few years ago and he upgraded the HD to 128GB at the same time. Yesterday after driving for a few hours it suddenly stopped playing from the HD and no other media source was selectable. The phone still worked and also the radio but sometimes when we played with it it took some time for the radio to start up. While fiddling with it the screen would show as for playing media but none of the media sources was selectable and sometimes it would go into the selection menu and sometimes not. My son suggested it was overheating as he has had experience at work (he is a Mazda tech) with radios overheating so we left it and this morning it appeared to be normal. Tonight after we got home from Wakefield it appears to have gone on strike again so maybe he is right and it might have a heat problem. Is there anyway to tell if the fan is working as it should or do the symptoms suggest other issues to anyone?

Anthony, I agree with you but if I am too look at a fan issue I need to know if it is operating within the parameters set by the factory and I can't begin to do that without knowing what they are. If I pull the unit out out and turn it on at what point is the fan supposed to work and how I tell if it has reached that point because if it gets to the switch on temp and doesn't come on then it needs fixing. Pulling it out and just looking at it proves nothing. Surely someone has had this issue before? When the unit is installed in the car can the fan be heard if it turns on? I can say that I have never heard a fan at any time while it has been operating.
Keep in mind that cooling may not even be the issue, is there any other reason that could be causing this behaviour, perhaps a firmware issue?
I have just had another look at it this morning and it is doing all sorts of weird stuff unlike yesterday morning when it returned to normal. The screens are all there, the radio works as does the BT but access to media like the HD and the SD card is spasmodic and eventually the screen commands stopped working. I got it to play from the SD card and then it appeared to be locked up while playing and would not respond to any commands. I pulled the SD card out and it just kept playing the same track so I guess that there is a cache in the thing.
I'd first pull the head unit out and check all connections — something could be corroded or loose. While it's out, do check around the fan for accumulated dust (although it doesn't sound like that from this post.)
If this has no effect and you feel confident, you could repeat the exercise inside the unit.
Particularly, I'd be looking at the power supply and connections to the hard drive and radio module.
Otherwise it's likely to be a visit to a serviceman.
Start easy, try to re-load the firmware on the device.
