    RNS 510 in Golf Comfortline

    Hi Guys,

I finally got my new Golf and I love it! I wish I had got sat nav but at $3,500 I just couldn't justify the cost.

I have seen the same RNS 510 unit available on ebay with Australian maps. Has anyone bought one of eBay and installed it? Does it work the same as factory? Who in Sydney do you recommend to install? Is there anything I need to know before going ahead and buying one of these units? Can I make the RNS 510 compatible with Bluetooth?

This is where I spotted it:

VW RNS 510 MFD3 Sat Nav Version C Volkswagen RNS510 - eBay, Navigation, GPS, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 20-Jul-10 15:40:43 AEST)

    Regards,

    Jonathon

Be careful with the online ones. I saw one installed last week that didn't work.

The car will need to be coded to the nav unit. This needs to be done by a dealership or someone with Vagcom or whatever it is called now.

...and I'm still waiting for the dealer to work out how to get the microphone working so I can use voice activation...and that's after a dealer fitting a genuine item..

Just rang Central Coast VW... they charge $500 to fit it... does this sound reasonable?

$500 is a huge rip off

    You can do it yourself.
All it takes is a T** torx head screwdriver (may want to check the T rating for the golf) and 20 minutes of your time.

There are numerous guides online about how to fit them in a golf/jetta.

It should work fine if you get the one from UK as i have one that i fitted last week and it is working flawlesly in the tiguan (as they are standard equipment)

All you need then is to find someone with a vagcom in your area to code it which should be free/pack of beer.

I personally have never seen a dealer fitted RNS 510 with voice activation. The unit doesn't come with a microphone. Not sure if you could order it separately and then get it wired up and coded.

Strathfield can do them but you will ned to ring them for a quote. They do installations for the Audi dealer in Five Dock and have a VAGCOM etc.

Apparently you can order the parts and it can work with the correct coding... Only problem is that the dealers don't know how to do it because they don't have much call to. It's being worked out for my car as we speak hopefully.

Mind you, also, you will need SW version of 2660 onwards, which probably doesn't come with the standard RNS, in which case, the dealer will need to reload and upgrade your system, which carries a risk of bricking the unit. That's why dealers don't really want to do it, unless they can charge you like a wounded bull....
