Thread: RNS-510 Coding

    Question RNS-510 Coding

    Hi

I've picked up a second-hand RNS-510 version B unit and am ready for a DIY installation in a MkV R32.

I have the security code and GPS antenna (which I assume I just tape to some spot inside the dash?).

However, I'm unsure of what I need to do to have the unit "coded" to the R32 stereo components? I understand I can take it to the dealer and part with $600 - which is not really an attractive option. But who else has VAG-COM? Would they have it at other servicing mechanics? Please help.

If your car came from the factory without satnav you need to tell the headunit that you have an amp by having the outputs set to low.

The gps antenna fits up behind the headunit under the dash.

I have photos and info on my website at www.my-gti.com.

How do you tell the headunit that you have an amp by setting the outputs set to low? Is that simply through the RNS-510 menu?

Using Vagcom/VCDS as mentioned on my site.

    Hi everyone

I understand that VAG-COM is a program that the dealers have.

As per original question, who else has these? Non-VW service centres?

I do not live in a capital city.

I bought a VAGCOM from this bloke in the US. Cost me about A$90.00 delivered.

Not an original VAGCOM but it worked for what I wanted it for.

I needed it to code the car to accept a different bluetooth phone kit that integrated better with the RNS-510.

    My saga is detailed HERE.

You will have to search for the coding required for the job you want it to do though. It might be on Maverick's site, I haven't looked.

The dealers use a tool called the VAS 5051 (and there are other variants like portable models) and Vagcom/VCDS is produced by a company called Ross-Tech. The places that would have this would be most of the VW specialists and some dealers may have one around the place. The dealer tool does pretty much everything that Vagcom/VCDS does.

    Where are you located?

Well it looks as though the cheap option from the US might be a go.

I see that there's an option for:
"Vag-Com Compatible Interface. Ross-Tech Version 409.1 USB Port"
    for $50AUD delivered.

And there's also one for $90AUD delivered which includes the upgraded Freeware Version 805 rather than 409.1

Anyone know the difference between the two?

If I go ahead and order this lead (whether I have to pay for the upgraded Freeware or not) is it a simple process to hook up a laptop to the VW? Please don't tell me the connection is on the back of the RNS-510 requiring full dash removal and refit again???

I've now spent hours stuffing around with this rubbish and trying to make sense of pretty unfriendly websites and guides. Still no luck in getting a successful VAG-COM / VCDS connection to the car to change the coding.

Anyone have a working VAG-COM or VCDS within reasonable driving distance of Townsville?!
