So the install went well in my December 2011 Golf Mk6 TDI 103Kw.
First started with no ignition key in. I disconnected and removed the Bluetooth module from under the driver’s seat. The Velcro they use to hold that module to the carpet is the best I've ever come across! took some effort to prior it away.
Remove the bezel around the existing radio - didn't break it, so good so far so good
Removed the existing RCD310. Bit of jiggling and it was out. Disconnected the cables, done.
Next I connected double to single antenna adapter - The RCD340 has a single antenna input and then connected the can-bus connector - all good, slotted the RCD340 into place - all good.
Now the test - Ignition on - the RCD340 presents with a clock. Powered up and it immediately went to radio. Tuned in some stations all good. Went to settings and adjusted a few things including Bluetooth - all went perfectly well.
Tested steering wheel controls. Controls things as expected, phone, mute, back/next etc. Great
Plugged in apple cable - initiated Car Play and asked to accept a few things, then it was alive. All apps working as expected. Steering wheel controls however do not initiate the Apple Car Play Phone. Volume, mute, back/next all work though
You need to fiddle with the sound settings a little to get the right balance between normal volume and the volume of applications like Maps. All good in the end. The sound quality is roughly the same as the RCD310. Probably a little less mids and lot less highs. Once adjusted it is fine. I did not expect an improvement in sound and I was right - It is good enough. You get what you pay for...
All tested well enough - I screwed the unit in and replaced the bezel. Looks like factory
Couple of things I noticed.
When you mute then unmute the volume goes back to the start-up volume not where you had the volume before muting? Minor issue
The USB power stays on all the time even when the ignition is off, keys removed and the car locked?? When the phone is plugged in it constantly charges and still remains in Car Play mode, meaning the radio itself is still running even though it seems to be off. Someone else mentioned this in this thread so I will go back to see if this was resolved. It didn't drain the battery overnight though (without the phone connected) so no big deal really as the phone is never left in the car.
Bluetooth works perfectly, calls are clear and the in-built mic works well and is also clear. It’s great you can have one device connected as the phone and another device connected for music. Bluetooth and Apple Car Play cannot operate together, it's either one or the other (as expected). The Apple Car play buttons are also on the right side of the screen. This is good for right side drive vehicles.
No phone, music, radio on the MFD (as expected), and no climate info of the unit itself (also as expected).
Otherwise a simple DIY upgrade to Android Auto or Apple Car Play with all their benefits. It really doesn't give you anything else really, but Car Play is what I wanted, so I got that for a relatively cheap price. I recently upgraded our other car with a Sony XAV-AX100 Car Play unit for about the same price and as a bottom of the range unit it is about the same (sound of the Sony is better by a margin) but the RCD340 is a very good upgrade without busting the Bank on a 2011 car.
I did notice the firmware is not quite up-to-date so I will update it. I will post anything new otherwise, I seem to be happy with this.
