Turned out to be faulty USB cable. All good now.
Plays music. Does navigation. Dictated text message.
Very happy.
The Nonda ZUS cable with right angle USB plug is super tough and pretty good value. 1.2m is just enough to get from the unit, inside the dash, under the gear stick panel and into the centre arm rest console to hide the cable. As per the pic you can drill/dremel into the stereo bezel (or the stereo) to hide the cable. Bezel costs ~$25 on ebay .
If anyone needs a new CANBUS gateway I have two unused.
Now driving a new Tiguan so didn't get around to testing them.
Send me a PM, I'm open to offers.

Just thought i'd add an update for anyone with the same car as I was told the RCD330 wouldn't work in my Passat V6 FSI Highline as I had the Dynaudio system.
Decided to take the plunge anyway and it works great! Didn't even need to unplug the battery. Only things not working are the dash info display, the climate control status isn't showing on the screen and obviously my reversing camera which I knew.
Hoping those first 2 can be changed with the OBDeleven but i wouldn't have a clue where to begin, I've also read I need to set the volume lower with it? And I've just bought this adaptor so hopefully that gets the camera going CVBS RGB Signal Converter Adaptor for VW Volkswagen RNS315 RNS510 RCD510 RGB A | eBay
It works with Dynaudio, but it's outputting speaker level unbalanced to the amp.
So it's not ideal for sound quality.
Original head units can be coded to change the outputs to line level balanced, which is what the amp needs.
Ideally you need to put a line level converter in between the head unit and your amp.
A camera adapter will work only if you have a low line reverse camera (IE the guidelines don't bend). If you have a highline camera it won't work.
You can either bypass the highline module and feed the camera direct to the head unit (with a digital delay relay triggered off the reverse light) or put in an aftermarket camera.
And that converter is no good even if the head unit was smart enough to work with the highline module as it's converting the wrong way. You'd need an rgbs to composite converter, not the other way around.

Sound quality sounds fine to me, not really any different to before to my ears. Only difference seems to be is it get's louder a lot quicker, ie half way is probably as loud as my old unit at 3/4 or more so would need to be careful not to go much higher than half.
Thanks for the advice, i managed to cancel the order on that convertor as I have a highline so it won't work. i'll just have buy an aftermarket camera then which will be annoying to run... any suggestions on one that will work?
I can live without the cluster screens and climate control status, they were nice to have but Android Auto is a million times better!
