That's worked perfectly, thanks!

I'm from Spain, and I have GTI MY08. So far this have been the forum where I have found more information about the RCD330. Many thanks guys!
My car came with MFD2 DVD that is not reading DVD's any more so I was evaluating swapping my unit for different options but now I'm mainly choosing between the RNS510 LED SSD and the RCD330.
I hate too loose the steering wheel controls and the MFA+ with the RCD330... but the Apple CarPlay and the cheaper price seems like the best option for an "old" car.
I have seen some screenshots of language menus with Mexican/Spanish and some of them with just US English and Chinese.
This is something that can be changed? It comes with the firmware? The firmware that people is using in this forum have the Spanish language?
Regarding the FM Radio functionalities, in Spain we have RDS. Some sellers say this radio have RDS, and some say it does not. Any clue on this?
May seem like a stupid things, but it will be very useful for my parents that sometimes use the car as well.
Finally, my gateway is 1K0 907 530 K. Some say, it's prior to K that should be replaced and others include K as the replaced ones... any clue on this?
Part No SW: 1K0 907 530 K HW: 1K0 907 951
Component: J533__Gateway H04 0021
Many thanks!
Thank you for the links, they are very helpful, I had come across several versions of this from other sites, it's always interesting to compare.
I few observations:
- It does indeed have both functional CarPlay and AndroidAuto.
- The highlight colour bars are not red on all screens. Annoyingly they are green on the phone screen and orange on the settings screen. Does any one know if this is a (wierd) new official look or just some bad modding of this image by someone?
- The AUX-in cable detect no longer functions. It appears to permanently register a cable in the AUX port.
I don't have sound connected to my desk test unit so I've not tested this on this image for any startup beeps etc.
A few other notes:
So I was previously running stock 5314 on 187B unit (I have one installed, and one desk powered for fiddling with). One of these images is flashable straight and one was not (variant conflict). It is possible to make any image flash-able by modifying the 'opt/std_plus.ini' and adjusting the 'AP_VER=' to something such as 'AP_VER=5.4.10.10' (More information and much more at: 大众车机天宝187A Hack笔记 - FreeBuf.COM | 关注黑客与极客 (Chinese)). Interesting this value appears to just be for the verification for installation, once installed the version will be correct to the one hard-coded in the image. (Insert normal disclaimers about doing this at you own risk so you don't brick you unit, if you do manage to do this, you can get around it a failed flash by renaming a known good image to the same as the one you were attempting to flash and reboot the unit).
Those different colours are actually in line with the original VW RCD510 unit colour scheme. Whoever set that up for the RCD330 did it to match the other stock units.
I actually don't mind the yellow highlights now. They're the only thing that pretty much matches the climatronic lights.
Interesting, I guess I was thrown as the original shipping firmware for the RCD330+ Unit was all yellow highlight bars on all screens so this seemed rather inconsistent with that. You are completely correct now that I've looked at videos of the RCD510 now though, strange design choice :).
Upgraded to the RCD330g Plus today on a mk6 TDI nice later life upgrade from the RNS510. And so cheap, putting in the RNS 510, Bluetooth gateway and mdi back in the day cost a fortune.
One small thing I don’t like is always having to have a USB cable coming out of the head unit for CarPlay. Does anyone know if you can put a USB port somewhere more discrete?

Sweet thanks mate! I’ll check it out.
Another question, when i go to read messages in Car Play I just get static, I’m wondering if there if this is just a firmware issue? My unit came with software version 5515 and car play version 210.81 are there newer builds you guys would recommend?
Despite reading the whole thread, I'm still lost as to which version I should be buying :)
I only need carplay but would be nice to have Android Auto in case I decide to go that way (as i prefer google maps over apple maps).
From what I can gather there is
a) a "No Name" one that is *nix based
b) a Desay (187B) Model that is Win CE based
c) Crngiar6.5" model - not sure what this one is?
Are they all OEM VW Hardware? or are some cheap chinese hardware?
Are they custom firmware or hacked VW firmware or Original VW Firmware?
Long time lurker, first time poster. Great to see there are still active forums around!
Just wanted to say thanks for all the info in this thread - I recently installed a Crngiar RCD330 (aka. RCD330+ / RCD340G) in my MY11 Golf R and the info here made the process much easier! Installed the unit, unplugged my 9W7 and was up and running in under half an hour.
The Crngiar unit came preloaded with S/W version 5515 and Bluetooth version C210. Everything worked perfectly straight out of the box.
Also bought a non-genuine RVC with composite output. Hasn't arrived yet, but not expecting any problems.
Some other things people may find useful:
Bluetooth Pairing and Android Auto Errors
I had some issues with Bluetooth (BT) pairing and Android Auto (AA) with my Galaxy S8. The RCD330 would intermittently give an AA connection error, sometimes tell me that the phone is not compatible, and would ask to confirm the BT pairing PIN on every start up.
I'm pretty sure I caused this by connecting AA before pairing the BT (AA uses USB for the video / touch and BT for audio). This may be due to the RCD330 not storing the data in its memory correctly if the pairing occurred while AA is running.
If you get these errors you can fix it by;
1.) Erase the Bluetooth pairing from the RCD330 and your phone. Deleting the AA connection on your phone (in the settings inside the AA app).
2.) Pair the Bluetooth with the RCD330 again, and power cycle the unit. After start up and successful Bluetooth re-connection, then connect AA.
Haven't had any issues since doing this.
Radio Reception
Radio reception is pretty crap (only get weak FM and no AM at all). I'm guessing this is because the provided adaptor only connects one element of the 'Diversity' antenna in this car. I'll grab one of these from eBay, hopefully it'll improve the situation.
Removing MDI from Centre Console
I replaced my MDI armrest bin with a non-MDI one (seeing as it's now redundant). Changing the bin is a piece of cake, but changing the duct that connects to the rear vents is a royal PITA. You need to remove the entire console to get the duct in-between the handbrake and cup holder. I've uploaded a picture here showing the difference between the MDI and non-MDI bins and duct.
Hope this helps someone!
