Seller also offered VW s/w update but no timeline offered?!
I'm returning the unit within 9 days...
my seller told me he has a firmware update to send that should fix the bugs, but will loose Android Auto. I told him that is pretty much the sole reason I bought the head unit and he needs to make it work with the new firmware. So I've basically resided in the fact that it will be going back to him as I doubt it will get resolved.

OK received firmware, looses Android Auto (AA) & red details replaced by yellow .
Beeps gone (edit), fader retains setting now and BT sound seems reliable
Original AA Firmware was 5314.
I have seen 5515 AA which reports no bugs -

Have asked seller to find& send me firmware 5515 and provide original AA 5314.
Will report how I go.
Cheers

So despite announcing in this thread I was going to hold off getting the RCD330 until it supported 3rd party Nav apps, I've given in and picked on up. I bought it from a seller on AilExpress who turned out to be the infamous Keith Feng who's been posting the YouTube videos of the Firmware Updates. I got the CarPlay version. My car is a 2009 MkVI Golf.
BODENLA RCD330 Plus RCD330G CarPlay APP Desai 6.5" MIB Car Radio RCD330G For VW Tiguan Golf 5 6 Jetta MK5 MK6 Passat Polo Touran-in Car Radios from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
The unit is a 187 B version by Desay (sorry for the crap photo here):
I'd previously mentioned my horror at the idea of a cable hanging down the front. I don't have the competence, tools or patience to solder in a rear USB cable so I split the difference and got myself a solid MFI certified Lightning Cable with a right angle USB in black:
ZUS Super Duty Charging Cable | nonda | Today's Technology for Yesterday's Car
Since the back wasn't an option i decided to run the cable back into the dash and the shortest route was at the edge of the unit. I was hoping to make it to the centre console between the front seats but that proved harder than i expected and was not gonna happen with a 1.2m cable. I could have removed the consoles up to the dash but that was far too much delay for my gratification so the cable went behind the stereo and into the glovebox. I could've drilled through the cover plate on the little box there but haven't bothered yet:
The phone GPS and reception works no problems from the glove box.
Since the stereo fascia is ten times cheaper than the RCD330 I decided to cut into the edge of that. I couldn't find the Dremel so i used a 4(ish)mm wood bit in a hand drill and dug down into it from the side of the bit. I'm pretty happy with the result and have ordered a new fascia for the stereo in case:
As you can see here, it's a CarPlay/Baidu/MirrorLink model with the Phone and App buttons.
The firmware version is a little different to what i'd seen out there but is the latest according to our mate Keith Feng, who also said he'd be providing firmware updates when they are freely available.
I've not encountered any problems so far on this version of firmware or hardware. Apple Maps is sh$thouse but works fine on the unit. Spotify works and I've noticed that it actually shows a dimmed blurred version of the album art behind the text which is better than nothing:

It kinda looks like a reflection in the photo but it's the album art.
I downloaded BBC iPlayer radio but it doesn't show up on the CarPlay menu. If i open the app manually it does show the playing screen and provides some text.
Overall i'm really happy. The yellow highlights in the menus are barely noticeable and with the red lighting in the buttons and knobs I don't think it's an issue.
I'm really happy with the communication I got from Keith during the sale who always responded to questions within a couple hours. All up the unit cost me $211 plus $16 DHL postage and took 8 days to arrive.
I'm pretty stoked so far.
EDIT: I made sure to download iOS 11.1 today to try and avoid the problems reported with iOS 11 and CarPlay. Works fine.
EDIT 2: Also, Siri messages works great but the phone calls using Siri don't seem to work well.

TBH, even though not what I wanted nor bought, it is miles ahead of the 310 CD/radio with Aux phone connection.
Does BT now quite well, hands free phone...will do a SD card for music, and when I get there I'll likely fit a reversing camera.
AA was for me the navigation (but really I don't depend on nav)
And still inexpensive. Much cheaper than a 'distracted driving' fine.
If you can't get better firmware I can offer the bug free non-AA if you like?
Does yours bleep on start?
Edit - Oh yeah - don't expect firmware drop for 1-2mths (if ever???).

I'm pretty close to grabbing the Crngiar R340 version, so it has Android Auto for me and Apple Play for her. Will be replacing a RCD510 in a MY12 Golf. I'll install a composite reverse camera at the same time.
But I'm getting hung up between one of these and a Joying 2gb/32gb octacore Android head unit. For those who've tried both, any thoughts? I don't want the sound quality to be any worse than the 510, which is my concern with the Joying unit.
If your concern is sound quality and screen, do NOT go for Joying or Android OS head unit. I bought one before and can literally experience the lower sound quality. I used it for like a month and couldn’t take anymore, so I switched back to original head unit.
I hope this help.
