Removing OEM speaker advice

Hi Guys,

Took the door cover off tonight as I am wanting to replace the speakers.

Two issues that I found that I would like to know if anyone has experienced.

1. The speakers are held in with rivets, it also looks like they may be glued. I know some of the Golf's use rivets as well. The usual suggestion is too drill them, however I don't want to have to take apart the whole door to get out the bit's that I drilled out.

2. The current speaker cable is plugged into the top of the speaker, instead of the back. I can't see an easy way to re-route these cables to the back.

Any Suggestions??

Yeah I can figure that out I mean there isn't really a hole I can see to poke the cable through?

haha true getting the speaker out will make it easier to tell what too do i suppose

edit: Maybe just make the wires a bit longer and run them under the speaker mount thing?
Oh and sorry, i dont really know what im taking about bored thouygh haha

I would assume that once you drill out the rivets & remove the speaker, there will be a speaker sized hole to put your hand into & remove the rivet tails?

extend the wires. You will probably need speaker wire, solder, soldering iron, heat shrink tubing & some connectors. It would probably be best to solder the new wire onto the speaker then run it back to the oem connector & connect into that somehow. that way you don't have to cut off the oem connector & can put the car back to stock later if needed. You might have to drill a hole in the panel & fit a rubber grommet to it although by the looks of it, the plastic bit is a spacer as well and you'll have to fabricate another out of MDF, so you could put a slot in the MDF to accomodate the wires.

i'm thinking that if you need to ask such basic questions that maybe you might wish to leave the task to a professional?

Had a gander inside mine on the weekend.




Noticed the splits on the dash have a mid and tweeter (or tweeter and super tweeter?).
I'm going to change the double din and try amping the oem speakers, see how they sound with a decent source and low pass filter and running a sub, before I replace them.

You have to drill the rivets, and my "ends" are now permanent fixtures in the bottom of the doors thanks to some paint. If extending wires and drilling holes scares you off, let a sound shop do it. You'll also find the speaker has an inbuilt spacer to allow it to seal to the door trim, and you'll have to replicate this with wood etc to get a good, sealed sound. Not major, but something I took the time to do, and it's no small task.

Thanks for your advice, I am just gathering some opinions at the moment. I had to fabricate a MDF bracket for the front speakers in my last car so I have done it before.

Why are your ends permanent due to paint?
