ok so does it have to be in the original vehicle? Or if you get a head unit without a code can you take it to a vw dealer/service and get the code read out?

It doesn't have to be in the original vehicle, if its the same as any that i have done before you need to go to the dealer as the request must be made using an authenticated vw/audi ip addressed diagnostic tester as its run through an encrypted server. They need the vin and the radio serial number, (usually embossed on the radio on the right hand side) might be a sticker on there also. I honestly have never tried to do it without a diagnostic connection to the car, i have every reason to believe that there would be some sort of extra security measure (like it will still need to be able to communicate, or see the radio being installed to allow it). Plus i doubt the dealer would do it if you came to them with a radio in hand and asked for the code.

    Just found out the code...

If you have the VIN for the original vehicle and serial# off the radio, a decent service dept can look it up on VW dealer website.

I've had some recent dealings with Lynas VW in the Barossa and they were good enough to look it up for me pretty much on the spot.

Took about 2 minutes and they rang back with the code.

Free plug for Lynas VW as other dealers/places were going to charge between $22 and $55.

Thats good, i know when we do predeliveries the radio code is obtained using a tester and should, i say should be assigned to the specfic vehicle details, so if you ever need it you should just be able to ring up and do as you did and find the code, but alot of dealerships just try and cash in and charge for it.

Happy it worked out for you mate
