RCD 510 + Reverse Camera. possible?

    Hi guys,

I have trawled through this forum looking for a definitive answer, but have so far come up with zip. Hopefully this will benefit all who are looking for the definitive answer!

Once and for all, could someone please (one word answers are ok, more info would be nice though) confirm if you can indeed plug a reversing camera into the RCD 510 factory unit without too much (read, any if possible) modification to the unit?

Have found a website that sells VW specific reverse cameras that mount into the numberplate lights.

    Cheers,
    Gav

You need to code the car to say it has the camera, and this is all provided it has the reverse camera input on the back (a mustard coloured plug).
The RCD510 I just installed on mine has the plug, and thinks it has the camera. Comes up with a blue screen whenever I select reverse.
Definitive: Yes, if you have the camera input on the back. (I'll have a look through the menu / manual in a minute to see if there is an item that might indicate if there is an easy way to tell.
Care to share your source for the cam's (pm if preferred Gavs) - I'm after one too.

Thanks for the link Gavs - these are not "plug and play" with the RCD 510 as they use an RCA interface. Why would VW do something so sensible as including an industry standard interface
You would need a Kufatec interface to get that to talk to the RCD510. The image linked below shows the back of an RCD-510 with the mustard coloured plug for the RVC on the left (facing)

Ok, after a good year researching this, I have the answer. And, the answer is yes!

BUT, a specific interface is required that needs to be activated using VCDS or by the dealership to say that the camera is now installed so long as THE RCD 510 UNIT THAT IS HAVING THE CAMERA INSTALLED HAS THE CORRECT, 26 PIN PLUG ON THE REAR.

Rumor is that ever since the MY 11.5 update, that the RCD510 units all come with the 26 pin plug from the factory.

Well it was just the rumour then or VW found a stash of the older units and started to fit them in the new cars (nothing wrong with that). As always, any info gained in the internet forums should be questioned as it very often comes from the sources that can't be verified.

For all I know the car may have shipped with an RNS510 and the unit was switched by the dealer so perhaps it is accurate. That's exactly why I pulled it out to check before spending $500 plus shipping on a camera.

Plenty of options depending on how keen I am for the RVC so not to worry. You win some and you lose some... I just seem to lose more often than win!
