RCD-510 into a 2008 Passat Wagon TDi with stock radio/single CD

Hi,
After using the search function I've managed to work out that I'm confused! Happens easily to me in these circumstances of electrickery.

Currently the car is fitted with the stock RD500 radio/ CD. The MFD is the red one.

Seeking advice on fitting a RCD-510 and a 9W2 Bluetooth kit into a 2008 TDi Passat wagon.
I've already bought both of these pieces separately, over time.
The RCD-510 (with USB output port on the back of the unit) is ex China, the 9W2 from Sydney, but probably via China too.
Have I painted myself into a corner?

My main desire is to be able to play music from an iPhone4S as well as the Bluetooth phone basic functions.
Of course the bonus of 6 CD changer is also there for me.

I would prefer to have an outlet, somewhere within reach for a USB outlet and or a 3.5mm plug.
Can't seem to find where such an outlet would fit in the 2008 Passat.
On ebay there are these for sale, but where do they fit?



Of course, if there is someone (or a business) in Hobart who can offer to instal the items in the car and do the coding or whatever is required, I'd be most grateful for the information.
Would prefer to fit the unit myself if I can. Have seen the YouTube video on removal and replacement.

Is there any issue to be careful of when asking whoever installs the two pieces to be sure it all works.
I know an auto electrician who has offered to do the installation, but he doesn't have any coding equipment or the VCDS or VagCom.

Fitting an RCD-510 is a piece of cake to install! Pretty much plug and play It was the first thing I did when I bought my Passat a couple of years ago, but I have upgraded again to the RNS-510 since then.

I have wanted install the Bluetooth kit myself, but I can't really justify it. I have installed the Media Device Interface into the glovebox and I don't use my phone much while driving. I reckon the worst part would be routing the wiring down to under the seat (presuming you were planning on installing it there). And of course, it won't work until it is coded in. Hopefully someone in Hobart can help you there, I have a VCDS cable but I'm not down your way much.

Also, I think that USB/Aux plug you have pictured there is for the Chinese model RCD-510's, you would probably need a Media Device Interface for your unit. There are two different types you see. I'm not 100% sure though...

Thanks for the reply. Chinese, yes probably, I've been bumbling my way along, trying not to bother others.
Plug and play sounds good to me.

I have instructions for removing the trim and installing the Bluetooth bizzo, though not the experience.
Broken trim is exxy to replace.

This is true! The trim around the head unit pulls out VERY easy. Everything else not so. e.g I recently installed footwell lamps under the front and back seats, and it took me weeks to track down the right socket to get the seats out!

If you look hard enough, people usually have detailed installs of pretty much everything you might want to do on the web. is my best friend.

I've now read through about 70 pages on the RCD-510 and the 9W2 BT installation.

The RCD-510 on its way is a Chinese one. The image is not mine, used from ebay.


It looks different to a couple of the different types I have seen.
The button functions and the top buttons either side of the CD slot seem to differ on various units.
Can anyone advise on the possible "year model" this one pictured would be?

Is this one really, "it's a plug and play" and/or will the 9W2 unit will integrate to become a working thing?
If there is a compatibility issue or can't be worked around, I'd sure like to know before installing the 9W2 BT especially.

Thanks again, there is a wealth of information out there, and especially here on VWWC, but for a novice as myself, knowing which information is correct can be difficult to work out.

Here are some images of the BT unit part numbers bought via ebay and also available via Gumtree.

It does have the polystyrene mounting pad for under the seat. This was the part number on the bag.

As of now I've fitted the 9W2 BlueTooth unit.
Works as it should with the RCD500 stock VW original as fitted to the 2008 Passat.

I can receive calls, make calls and stream music through my iPhone. Pretty much all I need to keep me a happy camper.
The bluetooth mic reception is crappy, to others my speech sounds as though I'm talking in a tunnel, underwater!
You can't have everything when you're on a budget.

Being a 2008 model the red MFD doesn't have the capability to show me much other than the volume of the phone when it is working.
No biggie.

I have a Chinese RCD510 which will be fitted once I have the correct FAKRA aerial adapter. They're different in as much as the RCD510 has a dual outlet and the RCD500 has two separate push on plugs. Thanks to kamold for helping me out on the aerial plug caper.

Fitting the Bluetoth unit to the Passat wagon, some information which might help another newbie.
1. To remove the left footrest, unscrew the plastic fastener in the front scuttle. The T20 plastic fastener on the side is actually a rivet type which can be plucked out. The footrest then lifts up and toward the front of the firewall.
2. The side of the centre console is held by one T20 screw, then the whole side piece slides down.
3. Use a guide wire for the microphone fitting in the centre roof console, from the console to the front of the headliner board. That was the hardest part of the job for me. removal of the middle a pillar trim and the upper A pillar trim is pretty easy. Removing the sunvisor from the drivers side is recommended, again, the T20 is the tool!
4. When removing the upper A pillar trim, the "airbag" plastic insert is removed by carefully easing the logo from the BOTTOM with a thin screwdriver.

I hope some of this information helps others.
