RCD 500 to RCD 510 upgrade with Ipod

Hey,
picked up my MKV GTi yesterday, and after test driving one earlier with an RCD510 in it, picked up an RCD510 off ebay cheap as an impulse purchase.
Turns out I have the RCD500, not the RCD300/310 as I thought, but neither unit has ipod control, which I understand is through the MDI.
My questions are:
What hardware do I need for the MDI so I can have ipod control? I have no centre console stacker (6 disc in dash), and no plug in the glovebox either. Should I be looking elsewhere?
I know I need to upgrade the gateway to Rev L or later, but do I need to purchase a new one or is it only an upgrade of the firmware through VAGCOM?

Wow, so quiet.
I spoke to the local VW Dealer, and they said (after quoting me what they thought I wanted) that it is not possible to buy just the MDI lead to the glovebox, that I need to buy the entire MDI media in kit that goes in the centre console. I much prefer the glovebox fitment.
Don't all the tiguans with the MDI lead in the glovebox use the same part? Does anyone know the part numbers by chance??

OK, an update to what I have found out.
The MDI kit available in Aus with the centre console kit consists of the following parts:

• Interface module
• Additional trim for the cd changer mounting
• Wiring loom (connects interface module with head-unit);

Alternatively,there is another kit like in the Tiguan's that is just the MDI interface and cable, part number 5N0 057 342.

The MDI kit mentioned above can have the interface module removed from the "CD changer mounting trim" for Glovebox installation (thanks HP), and this kit seems to be easier to get hold of too.

On the gateway upgrade - replacement is required to rev L or later as well as VAGCOM coding to set it up for your car.

All in all this is a much more complex process than I thought, and much more expensive.
The RCD510 cost me over $350, the MDI Kit will be $300 (+ with the ipod lead), the gateway another $150 ish plus recoding - all up about $900 to get ipod interface - note the prices for all the parts there are off ebay. From a dealer I've been told the MDI kit is ~$500, no idea on the gateway.
I currently have a nice Alpine 1din HU that might be getting a guernsey instead - ipod control, BT, MP3 - but even that is going to cost $250+ (incartec harnesses and Alpine Fascia kit) to install. The stereo won't look OEM, but at least I know it does everything I want it too, and can always upgrade to a 2din touch screen HU down the track...

Have you considered Dension Gateway, these are abundant on eBay with VW ready plug from $250-260ish. song titles will be displayed on the MFD, and you control the track selection with steering wheel control/radio interface

I have considered the denison gateway, but they have some mixed reviews about whether they work with aus units, and I'm not clear on whether they provide any track info on the HU itself, or only on the MFD (as my GTi only has a half height MFD). Anyone with a half height MFD?? Please??
