RCD 310 to RCD 510 Upgrade - 2011 Tiguan, Australia

    Hello all,

I am looking at upgrading the stereo in my Tiguan from an RCD 310 to an RCD 510, and have done a little bit of homework but haven’t been able to find the answers to some questions.

My car is a 2011 build Tiguan, currently with the stock RCD 310, with Bluetooth phone and MDI (added by dealer), and I am in Australia. I am looking at buying a head unit off Ebay or similar and installing it myself. Seems to be pretty straight forward, but I have the following questions if anyone can answer for me:

    - Will installing a RCD 510 affect my existing Bluetooth phone or MDI systems at all?
    - What are the differences between the Bosch and Delphi units available on ebay? I can get a Chinese Delphi unit for around $200AUD delivered, where as the Bosch units are around 300-350 AUD.
    - Do I need to be careful with any compliance issues for the DAB or DAB+ for the FM stations in Australia?
    - Are there any other additional cables, looms, etc. that I will need for the job?
    - Are there any other compliance issues with these units that can arise?

If anyone has any experience with this, any comments would be appreciated… thank you.

    1 shouldn't

2 Delphis are Chines and don't have RVC connector for factory RVC Bosch are made in Spain or Portugal and have a yellow 26 pin socket as per first ad and cost a lot more

3 There are no VW units with DAB+ available which is only used in Australia FM is totally different

    4 No

Look in the for sale forum there was some for sale there with pics of the back of the different ones

    5 Not normally

I've done this upgrade in my 2011 Tig.

If you go with OEM units, the main difference is if you get a port in the back of the RCD510 to connect up a reverse camera (RVC) or not.

Bosch do a version with the RVC connector but be aware they also do a version without so worth asking the question. You'll generally pay a bit more for an RVC unit.

I would stick with OEM as they are not that much more expensive and are guaranteed to work with your other accessories.

Check the parts for sale section as they do come up here from time to time also.

    Ok thanks guys, good info.

So I dropped past my local VW dealer and spoke to the workshop manager there to see if he had any spare head units laying around from any recent upgrades. Turns out that he had just upgraded his own Tiguan to an RNS unit, and he sold me the Bosch RCD510 he had for $250, and offered to help if I had any problems with coding etc. so it seemed like a reasonable deal. I fitted it myself in about 15 mins and it works fine with the MDI and Bluetooth phone connection that were already installed.

This unit does not have the RCV connector (which didn't bother me as I just have the sensors without the camera anyway).

One problem I am having is that I can't do Audio streaming via Bluetooth. It is important to note that I had this problem with my old head unit as well. I can sync up my phone to the Bluetooth without hassle, and also enable the BT Audio option in the head unit, but I just can't get it to work... I have read some other forums and it seems that it is likely that it is not supported, even though it lists it as a feature in manuals and even the showroom brochures!

Does anyone have any ideas how to get it going?

You'll have to find out what BT unit you have first and then go from there.

    2 options:

Either locate the module and read the model number off the label. It's likely either under the drivers seat in a foam container (OEM factory fitment) or in the dash where you've just been to install your RCD510.

Or get a VCDS scan of your car done and it will tell you the model number of BT from the scan.

Then once you have the model, you can look up to see what functions are supported: Telephone Retrofitting - Ross-Tech Wiki.

What you're after is A2DP functionality to allow audio streaming. If your BT unit doesn't support this then you're up for a new BT unit (or just play audio through your MDI).

Then again it may be an issue with the BT unit not being compatible with a newer phone which is also not that uncommon - particularly with some of the newer iphones it seems unfortunately.

Good luck. If your dealer is good they may even be able to assist and tell you what BT unit you have.

Ok thanks for that - managed to get my new Nokia phone paired up and streaming, so it must have been an issue with the other devices I was using.
