What are your plans ( I see there is no sub )?
Do you have restrictions?

Hiyo!
Some of you may recall the calamity that was my stereo install some months ago now.
I'm still not that thrilled with the SQ so I'm going to have another bash at it in a month or twos time. I'm considering ditching my amp + splits, getting better versions and maybe adding some rear coax's in the back doors.
For the record, heres what's in there now:
HU: Clarion DXZ776USB
AMP: Alpine MRV-502T 75x2
Frontz: Alpine SPX-177R 6.5" splits
Rear: none
Sub: none
Sub amp: none
Wires: Audison connection (power & RCA), stock speaker wires.
Battery: stock
I've got dynamat in the doors as well.
I want *SQ* - Yes it'll need to make some volume but nothing ear shattering. I listen to mostly metal, plus hard rock, some indie and a tiny bit of electronica... and a community radio station we have in perth called RTRfm.
Let me hear your suggestions, yo!

I don't belive the problem with your stereo is your splits. But what is supporting them IE, your lack of bass.
My speakers never sound as good with the sub off (3 way splits remember) as when its on. The sub just adds a level of depth that is missing when your trying to push everything through a 6.5" driver. And, my Drivers are basiclay dedicated bass drivers. The 4" take care of my mids.
IF, in the end, you decide to rid yourself of the X types, i know a Yaris in need of a better set of splits......
Also, i think i listen to the same things you do.
totally agree, adding a 4" for midrange helps alot when installed correctly. made a hell of a difference. the staging sounds so much more complete.
I realise if you are not running 4", keep the tweeter and woofer close together. but with a 4" mount the tweeter higher, perhaps highest.
I would suggest a sub definately!
Whats your budget ?
I don't really want a sub, it means half my boot space goes and its another amp... more weight! More weight = slower VR6, nnnnooooooooo!!
3-way could be interesting, do they make a 4" for the type-x??
I really dont know about the budget, probably around $1000-1500 and/or i'll just buy it all 2nd hand... im a frugal sucker at times

I dont believe SQ, without weight can go into the same sentence. It just doesnt work. I too would have suggested 3 ways, which would mean the only real weight you're lugging is an amp, rather than a decent sized sub with it's heavy space consuming box.
Nice set of Morel's, Dynaudio's could be had new at about $1k, and a significant amount less than that if it were 2nd hand. Find a decent, clean, powering amp - Audison, ARC, etc, and you're pretty set.
Another method is to run them active, which I've been told works wonders but I myself am yet to try.

If you have a 4 channel, i suggest, running a set of 4" splits, and a pair of 6.5" Earthquake shallow mount subs in the front doors. With an inch and a half Xmax, and 400w rms, they crank out some mad bass. you will have to have a 4 channel amp, with heaps of power though. the 4" mount in the dash quite fine, and mount the tweeters on the pillors.
No sub, Perhaps you should look at a set or Morel 9inch 3ways. Make sure you have lots of power for them though. More the Alpines Type-R to the rear for fill.

I would love to see some morel, have heard lot about them. 1000-1500 budget would be suffiecient for this project. This build would be awesome !
if you don't want to add a sub then like a few have suggested install 3 way system with larger mid bass driver. If morel is not within your budget look at something like The Hybrid Legatia L8-3-1 or Legatia L8-4-1.
Yes Alpine Type X use to make a 4" but the new Type X range no longer have 4" option, maybe for the time being add a second set of 6.5 in the front doors this will help somewhat with your lower and mid range requirements and if then still not enough add a 4" mid into the mix too.
But seriously i built a Rear fibreglass box that fitted in the left rear of the boot that weighed around 3 or so kilograms and then just the weight of the sub but did not take up any of my boot space.
And to top it off if you have amps that are under about 60mm you can install the amps below the rear seats.
Hope this helps
