Thread: Project Mk5 GTI Android head unit WIP

    Canbus?

    Hello

Thank you for your video review - It was quite informative and now I am seriously considering getting an Android unit for my car. I have a 2006 Skoda Octavia 2 (with the factory fitted audience cd changer) and was wondering if I need to change my canbus module to install this unit. I read that older models of the canbus module can cause battery drain with aftermarket stereos (even with VW touchscreen stereos!). Did you need to change your canbus to install this unit?

Another doubt I have is are these units a straight fit into the existing face plate of the car?

    Regards
    GG

    Hi GG,

Faceplate should be the same between our models - if the MK5 golf uses the same head unit then it will fit perfectly. In the youtube video, I had actually not aligned the top tab on the face plate surround so it stuck out about 2mm, have since refitted properly.

The can bus, seriously I did nothing other than order the product with the can-bus adapter (additional $38 USD) included in the item description, and plugged in the large plug at the back and it all just worked straight away! wasn't much to it at all.

The seller has updated the eBay page to the actual item:
ANDROID4 1 Muti Touch 3G Wifi GPS VW DVD Player Jetta Touran Polo Amarok Camera | eBay

I got the OBD2 module working - but the standard B-SCAN OBD2 android app is a bit limited to showing faults and errors.
Looking into getting it working in OBD2 Pro app so I can have live dials and screens as we drive, but so far it can't see the adapter, some guys on XDA have found ways but I'm a bit time poor. Great fun to play around with, I think my neighbours think I spend a bit too much time in my car...

If I can help at all let me know.
    Cheers,

Same as me 2 months ago!
I had no idea and still don't.
Would work just fine, huge upgrade over radio/CD.
Everything you need is in my posts from Page #1 including the installation guide.
Just be sure you look into it all before you purchase as unless you are intending for an audio installer to put it in I have done this as per the youtube guides I have listed.
    Good luck!

Not really a guru at wiring so hoping its not too tricky. Comes with a reversing camera? Wonder where i would mount it? Lol whats the benefits of having this over say the 510?

Wiring the unit, you just plug in the large black VW plug that came out of the old unit, and the antennas, then plug into the new unit, simple as that. The reverse camera included you just mount on the top of your number plate, run the wiring under the carpet/kick panels to the dash/head unit - plug it in and it works straight away, defaults to the aux input when you put it in reverse. Advantage over the stock 510 - more than half the cost, can connect to internet (using phone access point or 3g dongle) and Android Play Store for access to 1,000's of apps, media support - 1080p playback of all codecs, Pandora Radio, Games, email, facebook etc. I'm in no way associated with the seller but love the device and am very happy with the purchase.

Check out Torque for android, i use the lite version on my mobile as a free CEL checker/clearer but the pro version for i think 5 bucks gets you a lot more functionality for your ODB2. There are also a few other options which I haven't tried.

Awesome work btw, I'm considering this now, seems so easy and cost effective for android power at your fingertips.

Yeah Torque lite can't see the OBD2 as yet, will invest in pro as i don't think $5 is too much to ask.
It is linked and showing live stats in the unit's supplied B-SCAN app, all OBD2 data is visible in text but yes I'm keen on screen dials etc.
    Will keep working on this.
I may install the reversing camera in the next few weeks too

I'm going to assume the reverse camera support is a basic composite connector rather than the 4 Pin like the genuine reverse camera uses, in any case there are options like this if you want that OEM look (and flash looking camera!):
VW replica badge style reverse camera

I would really love to get some gauges onto my screen but since I already have the stock RNS510, reversing camera and bluetooth it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

Are there any options for displaying OPS on these things ?
I assume it can use Wifi to access internet via Hotspot on a Phone too.
