Whats the point You have the nav screen Why bother with it on a little screen you can hardly read.
Some people of course have to have everything. Legal or not
The article says it's a major car manufacturer but they don't know which one...
...but the image shows a RNS510 in a VW...
...but the RNS510 is by Continental, not Panasonic...
...and surely a new technology like this would only appear in the new replacement HU found in the Mk7 Golf (which will no doubt also appear in all the other models soon enough...

Not much different to using your phone in a car holder but if lawmakers are stupid enough to proclaim this legal and said phone in phone holder illegal (except for using it as a navigation device) then I suppose it's a good idea.

You got it the other way around, it transfers the phone's screen to the nav and allows the nav screen to control it. Look up mirrorlink. It means you can bring up Google Maps (Or angry birds, I suppose...) on your satnav unit anytime you want if you plug in your phone.
I'm not seeing VW doing this, not to the current RNS units in any case. The article says it's available from the dealership now.
I don't think it would even be coming to the Golf 7, at least not right away. You'd think they would at least announce it since it's a pretty big feature.

That would be awesome! If the RNS becomes just a thin client for the smart phone then that provides some serious longevity for the unit...no need to upgrade as you can just keep updating the software on the phone, or the phone itself. Definitely the way of the future.
If anyone has any other info on this please post, would love to beta test this product!

Wow - and as soon as you're done beta testing I'll be all over it.
Can't belive he didn't try playing Angry Birds on it
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, my supplier told me this unit is made by a Korean company called DMB, or something (I can't seem to find it on Google, getting the feeling my tech guy got the acronym wrong since he doesn't speak English). It's a pretty damned convincing exact replica of RNS-510, but it isn't an RNS-510. Although, that mirror feature is what I will be revealing on the new generation ANS units, very soon![]()

Doesn't really matter since the Mk7 Golf is almost here anyway. Time to start working out what is or isn't hackable![]()
It's a proper VW unit for Korea, I can tell you that much. It's in a lot of official photos for cars.
