    new install... what to get

    lookin at getting a new system ... well more of an addition to the current one really...

    i've already got a decent headunit and a set of 4 pioneer speakers (2 x 6" in the front and 2 x 6"x9" in the parcel tray.) i'm antsy for a bit more of a kick tho and the system seems to distort when i get to about 60% volume.

    this is what i am thinking of getting:
    • 12-15" sub (in custom box)
    • mono block amp
    • 4ch amp
    I would probably prefer to stay pioneer as they seem to be pretty good priced for the quality. what i am wondering is how much better it will make everything sound... both the 6s and the 6x9s are splits so would i really need some tweeters?

    i'm going to try and get everything done for vwnats in may

    AS "they" say any amp would be better than no amp.

    are you running any rear door speakers ? If so 4 channel would not be enough in your set up. Unless you are running off head unit as well.

    I reckon 12 inch would be sufficient. 15" in our boot would be waste of space.

    I agree 15 is not necesary. I just swaped from 15" to 10" and i'm loving it.

    As for speakers. Ditch the pioneers. You will apreciate the differance.

    If you still want a 15", see the Dub Tub, i have a 15" sub, in a custom box for sale.

    Nah only got the front 6s and the 6x9s in the tray. Otherwise I'd get 4 x 2ch amps and run one of them as a mono block for the sub.

    I don't think I'll be spending anything more than I have to. The pioneers work and they are better than the stockies I had so I reckon I'll keep them. I am going to install all the wiring and everything with a view to upgrade (eventually) but just not in the next 6 months...

    Is $400 good for the stuff below?
    * 12" sub
    * mono block amp
    * 4ch amp

    I'll probably end up going to JB for a 'JB Deal'.

    You wont get a Sub, mono block amp and a 4ch amp for $400. You may as well go to the markets and get some cheap (cheap quality too) amps for the job. If I were in your shoes' I would spend the entire $400 on a decent 4ch amp and get the mono block amp and sub when you can afford to get something decent.

    Also look on Ebay there are plenty of bargains on brand name sound equipment.

    I bought an Audison 4-channel amp unit for around the $400 mark (this was their budget amp) and I love the quality it gives out to my front splits. Unfortunately when it comes to music, you really do get what you pay for. IMO it's better to get a budget high-end unit than a high-end budget unit, if you know what I mean! With this in mind, head out to your nearest in-car entertainment shop that have a lot of their products hooked up so you can test them out. Just remember that they're powered differently and will sound slightly different acoustically in a shop than in a car, but it will give you a good opportunity to compare different models.

    I also have a 12" sub hooked up (the amp effectively running 3 channels) which is good enough for me. If I could have found a bargain, I would have went for the 10" purely for space concerns. To me, I can't notice the difference if it's hooked up to the same amp.

    Ray, I just bought a soso bugdet system which is what I am actually quite happy with for my boot install, the amp which I found on eBay for $72 which is a sony xplode, a mate who runs this is quite happy with it and at the price I got it I am really happy. Also I bought a 10" Pioneer sub brand new from Soundmaster who helped me out heaps and suggested that sub as a decent good one, for what I wanted anyway, a sub box you can pick up for $20 Then there is the cables which are about $50 at that to! My speakers I had when I bought the car where Pioneer the person before me actually put a decent system with splits, fronts and rears 6"s on there own they do a pretty good job and actually surprise me. My deck is a Sony that I have had for a while and I love it!

    see now that is what i am talking about! lol! 2nd hand gear is always cheap - i'm about to check out ebay now...

    I've never known Pioneer to be a 'cheap' brand, and most of their stuff is reasonably priced.

    What has anyone heard about the Jaycar stuff? Apparently it is as good as some of the High-High-end stuff but it doesn't have brand names on it so it effectively alot cheaper...
