New Apple Carplay radios - any feedback?

Looking at buying a new VW very shortly and need to decide whether the Apple Carplay functionality is good enough not to have to pay extra for the proper Nav unit.

Does anybody have experience with the Carplay units to such an extent that you prefer it over the proper Nav or not?

Its probably good enough, but the iphone Tomtom app craps all over both the inbuilt sat nav and the carplay apple maps anyday.

Its good enough if you're not really driving out of phone signal range. Mind you it uses your phone data, so if you're using it heaps then just be wary of that. The App Connect feature is kind of cool but from my first impression, somewhat a little buggy. Mine had issues with the music player within 2 days of leaving the dealership, I'm taking it back in next week. When it works though, its pretty handy.

I gather from general reading though that seeing its fairly new its a little glitchy. Most users are hoping for some software updates that fix it but rumour has it its all the way in November. Its pretty much apple pointing the finger at VW and VW blaming apple for the problem.

I still wish they had updated the software to allow for it to work over bluetooth. I'm finding recently that my iPhone isn't displaying any audio, ie the music part when getting in the car. To get it to work I have to get the phone onto my music in the music app itself. It wasn't always like this and nothing has changed obviously with the car software so Apple have done something. One thing I do wonder is if it started when I started an apple music subscription. Anyone else find their iPhones come up blank when on bluetooth in the media? It previously used to consistently just show the music which then drilled into the folders etc.
