Need help recoding radio

My 2002 B5.5 Passat had a battery change and I lost use of my radio/CD player.
I got the code from my VW dealer, but I cant seem to enter it. From what I have read I should get the word 'SAFE' on my screen, but I have only a blank screen??
Can anyone tell me how to get it going again???? PLEEEEEASE

To stop loosing your radio code ,next time you have to change the battery do what i do ,if you have an old battery hook it up to a cigarette lighter plug and connect it to the cars cigarette lighter . turn the ignition to Accessory's
you will find the radio will stay on while you change the battery .
