    Unhappy Need help with headlights

    Hi there,

    I own a Tiguan tsi 125 2010 and recently installed HID lights. The lights were working fine for a day until last night when the passenger light went out. I first thought it was a blub and swapped it with a spare which didn't work. Then tired changing the ballast over however still no luck. Finally I tested the output of the light connector plug (prior to the ballast) and to my surprise there is no power. So the at the moment the drivers light works and the passenger light doesn't. Is there a separate fuse and or relay for each headlight? If so, where are these located.

    Not generally a good idea to install aftermarket HID kits, it's quite common to have issues including, but not limited to: BCM failures, endless error codes, lights not working, damaged wiring harnesses etc.
    First thing you need to do is get a scan of your vehicle with VCDS and see what is wrong. Whilst there is only 1 fuse, the 2 sides are monitored separately by the BCM to allow it to give you a specific bulb out warning.
    If you pull the HID kit and plug your halogens back in does it still work?

    As above, revert back to standard to see if you can get the normal lights working again. Some times a bulb will throw a code and only start working again when the code has been erased! Had one the other day on a amarok, code erase all working again...kills me! Suspect BCM your issue.

    Not to mention it's illegal unless done properly and completely.

    Thanks for quick reply's. I have reverted back to original halogen bulbs and still no light / power coming from the passenger side light whilst the drivers light is fine. The interesting thing now is that computer is now telling me there isn't any problems / no errors indicating that the light is out. As you guys mentioned it is looking like the BCM is faulting. Is there anyway to reset it? Cheers

    Thank you for letting me know. I was aware however really wanted a better light as I do a lot of night driving. I purchased the standard 6000k and measured the beam cut offs marks on the original lights and then made sure the new were lights were within those lines. I am very conscious of other vehicles and defiantly don't want to impair anyone's vision driving the opposite direction. Would you be able to recommend a way for me to get it checked /done properly. Thank you

    I'd suggest that any ethical auto electrician should be able to do it properly, but it will be expensive as it requires headlight housing that were designed for HIDs/Xenons, auto-levelling linked to the rear suspension and light washers.

    Have you considered having driving lights or an LED light bar properly fitted. They could be HID as they only operate with the high beam.

    If you really are mindful of other drivers then you won't proceed unless you do everything that is required by the Australian Design Rules. However, if are insistent on going ahead with it, there is a generally accepted sliding scale of importance:

    1. You must have housings that are designed for HIDs/Xenons otherwise you are just scattering the light all over the place. It is generally accepted that installing HIDs into housing designed for halogen lights is not only extremely bad for oncoming traffic, but also worse for the driver of the car as it actually degrades visibility. If you want to know more have a read of this article.
    2. The installation of auto-levelling means that your lights point where they are suppose to. Without it, your well defined beams are only consistently lighting the road when it is perfectly smooth, but pointing in the air or too close in front of you every time you go over a bump on a 'normal' road. This also means that you are blinding oncoming drivers half the time.
    3. Light washers keep your lights clean so that the beam isn't scattered by a build up of dust. However, many people report that they they don't actually clean your lights and just make your car dirty, so your mileage may vary - I guess it depends how good the design is.

    I sincerely hope you'll think about it carefully, if not for your sake, then for the sake of those on the other side of the road to you.

    Easiest way to get better light output is just replace the globes with Osram Nightbreakers or Philips Xtreme Vision which are whiter and brighter. Check powerbulbs.com
