Mk7 Golf upgrade to MIBII (Discover Pro with Carplay)

    Hi All,

Today I did an upgrade in a Golf R from the original MIB-I system to the newer MIB-II, otherwise known as Discover Pro with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

All the hardware was supplied by forum sponsor VWCentral. I just did the installation.

The parts need to be specially modified by VWCentral to remove component protection, and match the hardware to the vehicle VIN prior to shipment.

Unfortunately I was a bit pressed for time, so wasn't able to take a lot of photos or video (and the video I took was having focus issues with the camera, sorry...)

The installation procedure once all the correct hardware is supplied is fairly straight forward.
I followed this guide: VWVortex.com - Golf 7 2013 discover pro retrofit with CARPLAY!!

I also was able to enable TMC (traffic information) for navigation, as has been done in Skodas.

The new unit is very responsive, from the little I saw of Carplay I was impressed, and the integration with the vehicle is obviously seamless being OEM.

If anyone is interested in this upgrade, get in touch with VWCentral.

I'll update this post with some more details and photos/video shortly.

Here is a short video of Carplay in action, please excuse the lack of focus, the camera was playing up and hunting for a focal point...

Not my car, I just did the installation. You'd have to speak to VWCentral to get a quote. I didn't ask, sorry

Kamold: Nice work - well done! The price of the unit on the link is ---well.......... a bit high, but value is always in the eye of the buyer!!

Just one question - I assume that the coding change was meant for the addition of the USB and Iphone functionality. The link was for a LHD vehicle, so I assume that the actual code for Byte19 in Australia was HexF6 (not F4 as shown in the link). Please confirm

    Hi Don,
I can't afford a mk7 let alone upgrading one so as you say value is a proposition only for an owner.
I only have vcds, which doesn't have any details as yet for the adaptation channels for the mib2. So I actually don't know what difference flipping that bit does to the configuration....

Kamold: OK, I have both cables. They each have their advantages and disadvantages. The great feature about VCP is the "login finder" - if you know a single security code, login-finder will find the other security codes for the control module. it's a slow process (10,000 numbers takes about 45 minutes to poll), but it does work! VCDS of course has the great "Long Coding Helper" facility and it is generally a more intuitive cable to use- it's the more superior product IMO

Anyhow, I've posted below the screenshot for Byte 19 showing the pertinent bits for your project. The screenshot is for a MIBI, but I suspect that it's the same for a MIBII

Actually, now that I've posted the screen shot - something is a bit odd. Your link says the Code should be HexF4 which is binary 1111 0100. If I look at the screen-shot below for Byte 19, the USB & IPhone functionality is HexC0 which is 1100 0000. The Code for RHD + Feature Band Switching + Rear View Camera, is Hex16 which is 0001 0110. So the total binary Code is 1101 0110, which is HexD6 (not HexF4 as per your link)!

If you used HexF4, you would have programmed a LHD car and you would have also activated the MOST databus. Did the MIBII unit have the OEM external amplifier (J525)? If not, I'm not sure that the MOST should be activated. If the MIBII unit did have the Digital Sound System, then you might want to have a look at Byte 4 (sub- woofer installed) and Byte 11(external sound system)

Sorry for complicating your otherwise excellent work!
    Don

All good Don, appreciate the responses.
At this point everything is working as far as I know, so I'll have to leave well alone.
But I'll hopefully get another look at the system to check out a few more things (like radio station image tags etc) so will check those bytes and get a some details over to Ross-tech to help get some more of a library built up on these beasts.
Was my first encounter with an MQB platform in any guise...
