    MK5 Jetta reversing camera

    Hey all,

I've been thinking a bit about RVCs for MK5 Jettas. I know of the OEM badge cameras that can be fitted to golfs with a little sheet metal removal and the boot handle camera install, like this:

VWVortex.com - OEM rns510 reverse camera for jetta: DIY

There seems to be a bit of a lack regarding MK5 Jetta installs specifically. So... I was chasing a bit of information, If I can get a couple of answers then I thought I'd try a different install and do a bit of a write up on here about it.

I'm thinking of placing a camera that replaces one of the number plate lights, this style:

Car Rear View Reverse Backup Parking Camera for VW Touareg Volkswagenv SKODA | eBay

    • I was hoping I could get a camera and then an OEM wiring loom, change the connection over and plug it straight into the back of my RCD510. That means the new camera would need the same video format as the OEM. Does anyone know what that format is?
    • If the format is different, I assume I'll have to get a converter then change its connection to the OEM 26pin. I'd hope that's reasonably simple once I know the two formats.
    • Alternatively I was thinking I might be able to retrofit a OEM camera into the plastic housing above, not sure about this yet. I might consider it if someone can see a problem with my first idea.

That's seems to be all that's needed I think. It will require a bit of playing with wires but from what I can tell I should be able to get something that looks reasonably genuine without having to get the angle grinder and silican out.

Can anyone see any problems with this?

    Cheers,

    Walter

If you use an aftermarket camera you are going to need an RGBS to composite video converter box to allow video in to an RCD510 or RNS510.

    Like this:

If you use an OEM camera, you won't have to covert. And you can use a highline camera module which will add bending guidelines.

Another option would be to use an aftermarket camera, and swap the RCD510 for an RCD330G plus which uses just a regular composite video input, plus you get Carplay:

    It's a seperate control module.
Camera plugs into it, that plugs into the head unit.
Uses steering angle sensor data to overlay the bending lines of where you are reversing.
Do you want a part number or want to know if you have one?

Cheers, I don't have one, the car has no camera and a RCD300 in it. I'm doing a complete headunit, reversing camera, bluetooth install. I don't suppose you know if Bosch RCD510 (5K0 035 190 A) units are Pal or NTSC do you know? I am assuming pal being its for the European for the Australian market.

I've come across an item that seems like it will do exactly what I was thinking of, silly to think I might have been the first person considering it:

car camera for VW Beetle Caravelle Eos Golf5/6/GIT/Plus Magotan Multivan RGB 26P | eBay

They claim to be RGB with the 26pin plug attached. Even have a choice of PAL and NTSC.

Any thoughts to why one of those might not work?

Yep there are plenty of aftermarket options available, just need the RGB converter so it works with the head unit.
Can't comment on that particular one but seems appropriate as long as you get the correct camera.
Rcd330g plus would seem a better option if you want to use an aftermarket camera.
Bluetooth is already integrated, no camera converter needed and you get Apple CarPlay and mirrorlink.

unfortunately I only came across the RCD330 after purchasing the 510 and a bluetooth module. I was only looking at OEM units so the 330 didn't show up. pity because it looks good and has more features.

I'd prefer to use a OEM camera but they don't exist for 08 Jetta unfortunately. If someone knows about the PAL/NTSC then I might give one of those cameras above a go.

    Cheers,

You could always sell them again.
    Or not.
    Your call.
You can use either a pal or NTSC camera.
If you wanted to use OEM you could do a flip camera from a golf.
Will take a bit of adaption of metalwork but if you're ok with that it would be a 'factory' result.
Or adapt a Passat boot release camera mount.

That's good news, so RCD510s alow both video input formats do they?

Unfortunately those Passat cameras don't fit the mk5 Jetta. Different size and mounting points I've read. you can fit them but it required a bit of grinder work that I was hoping to stay away from.

I might look into the RCD330, I could probably make money selling the components I have and buying one of them. Do you know much about them? Do they still need VCDS coding? Do the buttons on the steering wheel still work?
