Using the RNS510 with an ipod permanently connected via the MDI. It's not great sound quality but it's good enough for now and has been fine.
Over the past few weeks I have noticed that sound almost sounds as if every song the singer has a sore throat and is crackling for want of a better word. As if the speakers are knackered.
I switch to radio and it sounds fine, but of course each sing is different. One song was terrible (that has been fine before) so I know it's something with the unit.
I then connected my iphone and it too sounded quite poor. Which leads me to believe it must be the MDI unit that's causing an issue. And thus has anyone encountered such issues with their MDI unit? Just be good to gauge if this has happened to anyone else? Thanks
Andy

Had a similar issue with mine not long after I took delivery, sound was only coming out of the left speakers and crackly - turns out one of the MDI wires into the headunit had become loose. (read: dodgy install by dealer)
Was yours fitted by the dealer?

I was less than impressed with the sound quality through my MDI, until one day when I was going through the "SETUP" menu. Changing the "MEDIA INPUT LEVEL" to "LOW LEVEL" improved it significantly and it's now as good as CD quality. Also, make sure your iPod equalizer is set to "OFF". Basically, you want to let the head unit do the equalising and amplification, not the input device. Solved the problem for me anyway.
Thanks for the responses. been abroad so just got back.
It is under warranty, but that's the final solution, so we'll leave that for now.
The unit was factory fitted and for the past 1+ years has been fine so it could have gone wrong of course.
The idea of the input level is excellent though - thanks. Given the RNS510 with MDI has a slightly different menu system, it does have the stupid problem that if I use my iphone with the headphone jack to link into the AUX socket, I have to disconnect the MDI unit or it will not work (bloody silly design). When I was using this, I changed the AUX input level to HIGH. Now, I had assumed that this would only be relevant given the option above is whether to activate the AUX input or not. I had unchecked that but of course if the two things cannot be used together, they are most likely linked, and thus this may effect it. Let me try it and see what happens but I have a sneaky suspicion it may solve the issue and thus be why it's recently started to happen.
Sorry, but further evidence of how ipod integration and the RNS510 remains an afterthought and is still weak. Ah well...

And yes, that was the problem. The AUX and MDI are linked, so if you have the MDI, regardless of whether, in the menu, you have activated the AUX input, the other option, AUX input level does apply to the ipod or anything that is connected to the MDI. Thus you really need this on the lowest setting to be any good...
