    MDI Firmware Oddities

    Hi Folks,

we have an Amarok and an Alltrack - both with MDI and using 2 different iPods.

in my car, the Amarok (with RCD510) - both iPods work as expected - plug it in, and when we start the car, they show Media-In, and you press the Media button, both iPod's play...

in my wifes car, the Alltrack, my iPod (80GB Classic) works as it does in the Amarok, but her iPod (60GB Classic) when we start the car doesn't display Media-In, and in order for the RNS510 to "see" the iPod, it has to be unplugged and plugged back in.

all I can think is that the firmware on the MDI units is different - is there a way I can determine what firmware version the MDI's are running, and can I upgrade the Alltrack one to be the same as the Amarok?

    Heyys mate,

    I'd recommend looking here:
Firmware updates for RNS510 units in Australia/NZ

or if your worried perhaps here:
RNS510 upgrades, repairs incl. coding. Who can help.

Otherwise your safest bet is to ask your local dealership for an update.

thanks for that - is it likely to be the Head Unit though?

I have the same problem with my Alltrack and iPods (classic 60 & 80gb). It does work fine sometimes for a while and then reverts back to playing up. Occasionally, no amount of reconnecting works and it requires the head unit to be rebooted beforeaconnection Can be established. The wife's Nano seems to work OK. My cable is a cheapy from eBay and I wondering if that was implicated.

Interesting... Our cables were thrown in by the dealer and have the VW part number on them...

In going to try an MDI firmware upgrade on hers tonight and see if that fixes it.... Otherwise it'll be a service thing for them to fix

As far as I am aware the MDI is simply a connector and the unit has the firmware.

So probably no such thing as a MIDI firmware upgrade It would be coding in the headunit that would affect things

Lucky you getting cables as they are about $80 each at a stealer and about $15 on Ebay. The one I had always worked on the few occasions I used it. Was a pain in the Proverbial opening the glovebox and pulling down the tray. Then hooking phone up and trying to stuff it all back in where it didn't want to fit. Far easier to stick the music on an SD card and poke it in the slot.. Wont own any more Apple products Im afraid.

MDI has firmware. It can be updated by putting the firmware file on a USB flash drive.

yeah, correct - most recent MDI firmware is here Volkswagen Media Device Interface (MDI) Firmware Upgrade 0530-0546 KW22-2012 | my-gti.com

would be nice to know how to check the currently installed firmware version - it doesn't show up on the Head Unit

You have to check fw version with VCDS.
