I don't think it would be illegal to share the disc to your friends. But if it was copied there would be copy right laws involved The maps are not a one off use and can be used Or shared. I can seen no laws being broken ?
Yes I know Hillbilly But the Dealers charge unsuspecting customers over and over to install the same maps into many cars and charge each and every one with the same disc. How many time have you heard. That the disc was not with the car after installation
I'd hazard a guess that you're actually buying a licence to use the maps on one car, the fact that it works on lots of cars thanks to being an offline system and a read only disc is more of a happy coincidence.
My pioneer AVIC has an SD card which had a code to enter, then a return code which you had to activate online, then another code into the radio to make it work. It was painful to get on there, but that's how they decided to fight piracy. The RNS never got that complicated (partly because it's so old I'm sure ).
From what I understand the new nav units in the VW's are more complex to install now too??
Bottom line here, everyone is buying their own maps, never copying them or sharing them... When it comes to anything else, refer to rule one of Map (Fight) Club.
