MDI will work for audio output + charging, but not for seamless control via RCD/RNS touchscreen interface anymore. You will need to select the song/album/playlist you want from the device itself.
"Apple has confirmed to Macworld that these adapters support analog and USB audio-out, as well as syncing and charging. However, the adapters don’t support video-out or iPod mode, the latter a special mode that lets particular accessories, such as car stereos and some whole-home-audio systems, display your iPod’s menus on the accessory’s own screen. Here's a video of what iPod-Out looks like: QNX iPod Out Video - this is the exact same as what VW have leveraged through the MDI adapter via the RCD/RNS units.
The solution? There is no solution. Apple have moved forward in the view that BT is the future connectivity method for vehicle audio (hence their inclusion of it on the iPod Nano), so are not concerned with vehicle integration in that way anymore.
