I'd be wandering into my local JB or car stereo store - you might be surprised at what you can get for what you would sell the RCD510 for. And they are a good upgrade for the RCD500 or RCD310 so you shouldn't have any problems moving it. (Just looked - an Alpine, single DIN, Bluetooth / Ipod / Front Aux in can be had for $300)
Most retailers will install, or you can buy aftermarket plug and play leads for (easy) DIY. If you ahve a 2 DIN unit you can also install a dash pocket and a single DIN unit.

not sure you need the emulator.

My mates golf 5 with rcd510 installed has the can wires disconnected to stop the battery drain until he gets new gateway. Only thing that changes is you have to manually turn it off when you get out and no steering wheel function.

I guess I could throw it in as see what happens, I'm aiming to get a RCD510 to ISO harness adapter, then an ISO to whatever I buy adapter to reduce cutting and soldering. An extra $20 to see how the RCD510 works would be OK.

You have made me stop and think about the existing steering wheel controls though, would those be a feature of the radio, or a feature of the car? I mean, can I buy a radio that will work with the steering controls, or will they be dead with anything non OEM?

Honestly, save the hassle, sell the rcd510 for $300-350 on these forums, buy a double din non gps unit from overseas (sonicelectronix, etc) buy a steering wheel control module as well and u can have a brand name hu with better audio output for about $300 on top

Good advice, thanks. I'll head in to JB tomorrow for a look around. I'll have room for a 2 DIN and just assumed that is what I would have to replace with, but now that you mention a dash pocket it's opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I'm a sparky so I'm pretty comfortable doing the installation, and I love that sense of achievement you get when you step back and see your work at the end of the day. And hey, if I screw it up, THEN I can visit an installer
