    Help needed! OEM RVC installation

    Hi all
Is there anyone out ther that can advise me. I have installed an OEM RVC into my 2008 Tiguan and have connected the 3 cables to acc 12 v power (cigarette lighter socket in the boot) another to 12v from the reverse lights and finally one to the body. I have checked the voltage from the two power leads and the earth using a multimeter and all appear to be ok. I have even tried it with the engine running to no avail.

The separate video signal cable runs directly from the RVC to a new RCD 510 that now has the 26 pin yellow camera socket. I have double checked the connections at the RVC and radio end and I still have no picture! Do I need to take it to a dealer to have it coded? Any advice would be most welcome as I am at my wits end!

You will need to enable the new feature using VCDS or (hopefully not) a dealer.

    There is a guide at
RVC retrofit with an original Tiguan camera kit. - myTiguan Forum
You will just need to register.

However you will need a VCDS interface. Do you have one?

Thanks Kamold I sort of suspected this would be the case even though I am only connecting up a lowly RCD 510 unit to the RVC I was told it was not necessary. Unfortunately I do not have access to VCDS or a cable and as you know I live in Mackay and the local VW dealer is new in town and I doubt if he will know how to activate. Is the VCDS the same as the VW OEM system?

Do you have the menu path to what has to be changed in order for it to work? It may quicken the process if I ask the dealer to do it!. My option is to find someone on the forum who can do it who lives in Brisbane for a carton or two!

VCDS is an 'enthusiast' level tool rather than dealer/technician level.

That said it is used also by a lot of independant mechanics as well as it is MUCH easier to use and can do 90% of what VAS-PC (the dealer tool) can do for most situations.

Why not try and get cosy with the local dealer's tech by offering them a case or two on the side?

It is a 5 minute job (I had to disable mine), I have the cable and am in Brissie - I'm even up in Rocky on Wed/Thurs this week, not that that helps (closer than Brissie ). Pretty sure the cable is locked to the computer it was enabled on - can someone clarify?
As Kamold said, ask the VW dealer - it is a simple task of going into the menu options and enabling one bit.

The cable is not locked to a computer. The license is in the cable itself. So someone could send you the cable, you can install Vcds and use it and then send it back.

Let me know if you can't get hold of one and I can send mine up to you as I don't need it right now.

Thank you for your offer Kamold as I said in my PM the local dealer techie was very derisive of VCDS and fed me a good story of how long it would take to do the job and I would have to book the car in next week and just maybe it might be done! Not the sort of thing you would expect from a new dealer trying to establish a new marque in staunch Toyota Holden Ford territory. Nor does he know I know some very influential people in VW Aus as I won a competition with them last year and met some of the big guns VWA in Melbourne. I will pm you my contact details
99_FGT thank you for your offer unfortunately I will be away on a mine site on the one day you will be in Rocky

Hi All thanks to one forum user who has kindly loaned me his VAGCOM cable I have been able to activate the CANBUS module for the RVC. Unfortunately it is still not working and the VCDS software has reported the following fault
    Thursday,26,April,2012,18:59:33:02396
    VCDS Version: Release 11.11.3
    Data version: 20120401

    Address 56: Radio Labels: 5M0-035-1xx-56.clb
    Control Module Part Number: 5K0 035 190 A HW: 5K0 035 190 A
    Component and/or Version: Radio RCD510 050 0207
    Software Coding: 01000400040005
    Work Shop Code: WSC 01357 011 00200
    VCID: 234E1D2F22CED91
    1 Fault Found:

    02873 - Control Module for Back-Up Camera (J772)
    004 - No Signal/Communication
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 01100100
    Fault Priority: 6
    Fault Frequency: 1
    Reset counter: 146
    Mileage: 59438 km
    Time Indication: 0
    Date: 2000.00.00
    Time: 18:39:13
This error appeared in both the #19 Canbus Module and #56 the radio module and was there even before I ticked the RVC #6C module in the installation list in the #19 Canbus module.
I figured there are nine potential areas for this fault to happen
1 Faulty RVC interface on headunit
    2 Faulty Cable
    3 Faulty RVC
4 Bad connection between video cable & head unit
5 Bad connection between video cable & rvc
6 Bad connection between powerplug & rvc
7 Bad connection for +12v source at rear cigarette lighter socket
8 Bad earth connection from rvc to chassis
9 Bad trigger connection from reverse lights to RVC

Anybody able to interpretate this txt file further and where to start first to isolate the problem. I really hope it it is not one of the first three! Not looking forward to removing all the trim again especially around the tail gate! Really wished I had done a quick check operational check before i installed all the wiring!

OK, can you remove / clear the errors and see if they reoccur?
As you said, the errors occured before you set it up, and it isn't uncommon to see an error in cases like this. Happened when I installed my BT, and again with the MDI.
Let us know if that doesn't work.

There are 2 types of RVC:
    1) dumb with fixed rear parking lines,
    2) active with assistive paking lines that curve as you turn.

The active type comes with another control box as part of the wining loom. ie the control box sits between the Head Unit and the camera.
The dumb type is just the RVC and wiring loom only.

    Which RVC have you got?
If you have a dumb type I wonder if you have turned on the active type of RVC and this is what is throwing your codes.
