Battery disconnect made no difference - same results.

VAGCOM scan can't contact the radio module, so that sounds like a red flag to me...

From the UK - the BT from eBay (see the BT thread) and the MDI retrofit from shop4vw.

No, the car worked perfectly when it arrived - and I've got no reason to believe my RCD500 or RCD510 have any problems... it's likely that there's a problem with the CANBUS radio interface due to my wiring skillz while installing the MDI kit (which I've since removed).

Yes, that's the BT kit I bought - as per the BT thread - please post your replies there if you want to discuss it (although mine's still in the box). MDI was from Shop4Volkswagen - Genuine Volkswagen parts and accessories, not from eBay.

So I re-read Mav's post - and realised he might have meant "disconnect the batter, reconnect it & then wait 10 mins, then see if the RCD turns on" - so I tried that... and it didn't work either.

I'm fairly sure it's something to do with the CANBUS not being able to contact the radio module, but exactly what the cause (or fix) would be - I'm still stumped.

Anyone have any ideas on what to try?

Last resort is to take it to Derek or George & pay them to find & fix it - but that's money I had't planned on spending!

have you checked you have got the can bus wires in the right place not the wrong way round. check the fuse in the back of the radio and the fuse in the fusebox under the bonnet next to the battery.

Random thought, check that you haven't activated the transport mode on the 500, and if you bought the 510 off someone they should have activated it.

I checked that on the 510 (as I know which buttons to press) - didn't make a difference. My understanding is it'll still turn on in transport mode, but give a warning/error - the fact that the VAGCOM scan says it can't contact the Radio Module suggests it's not a transport-mode issue too.

I checked the fuse in the engine bay (F19 from memory), and the fuse in the RCD510, but I haven't checked the RCD500 - will do tonight.

Yes, I checked the CANBUS wires are in the right place (as per the colour-codes listed in the wiring diagram) that came with the MDI - it's CAN-H orange-purple and CAN-L orange-brown. Unless the MDI instructions have the colours wrong! - EDIT: all the doco I can find suggest it's correct.

The one thing that confused me though is that a multimeter on CANBUS High (positive) and CANBUS Low (negative) gives -11V -> which I thought maybe should be +11V - anyone know the correct voltage & polarity?

Double-checked all the fuses - no issues - so I'm still stumped!

Next step is to book it in to be checked...
